Mavs rebuild

Postby Nacho » Fri May 04, 2007 8:14 am

Mavs must do one of 2 things:

1--Get rid of Dirk for a boatload of players or one other "great" player

2--find another "great" player (preferably a center) to go along with Dirk by trading existing players

I favor the former--Get rid of Dirk for a true superstar. I leave the easy part to Cuban. This advice is free Mark. Do with it what you will.

I've always thought Dirk was good.. really good.. but not great.

The only person I would trade Dirk for would be KG.. he would be great to build around.
What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.

What would it take to get him out of Minnesota?

I really don't see trading Dirk as a good idea. I would think doing anything drastic this offseason (ie moving Dirk, Josh, Devin) is not in the Mavs' best interest unless its a deal you just cannot afford to turn down. I am not a Mavs fan at all and would love to see them overreact by blowing up the roster but cmon this team did win 67 games. One awful playoff series is not enough to scrap the team when one year earlier you were a game from the finals.

I think the real killers are Dampier's awful contract and while most won't agree I thought the Mavs were foolish to bring back Jason Terry at that money too. Will Stack and Diop leave this offseason? Those would be huge losses obviously.

Nowitzki's contract will make him very hard to trade. If he doesn't have to be the heart and soul of the team, his talent and unique set of skills remain among the best on the planet.

If I'm Cuban, I:

* Don't re-sign Stackhouse. Looked good in a couple of games in this series, but way too inconsistent for a guy making that kind of cash. He'll look good one night and then take a week off.
* Trade Terry. This series exposed him for what he is: a shooter who can't handle the ball, can't/won't defend, can't pass. Trade him immediately. Or sign Stack and package them in a trade.
* Listen when teams ask about D.J. Mbenga. Fringe player here, but there have been many calls asking about him. Get something of value, because he'll never play significant minutes when Diop is re-signed (a must) and with the money invested in Dampier.

To me, Nowitzki is untouchable, and Harris and Diop are close. Everyone else is for sale, in exchange for someone with heart.

The trade was the right move, since it brought Devin Harris, but Antawn Jamison has a lot of heart. He would have been very helpful in this series (if healthy, of course).

Dirk is missing in the post season. Except for one game against SA, the mavs pretty much got to the finals in spite of Dirk last year.

What a bunch of Barkley puppets. This talk about Dirk is stupid. Sure, half of the blame for his lack of performance in most of the games of this series goes squarely on his shoulders. His performance last night was dreadful. But a great deal of blame (or credit depending upon how you look at it) goes to Don Nelson.

As for the series, how do you account for the way the Warriors played? Baron Davis gave a performance for the ages and deserves the accolades that are coming his way. Here's hoping they continue to play like they played against us in the next round. Wow.

Worst Mavs move ever: getting rid of Nash. Must have 2 great players to win a championship.

The coaching staff has to own up to their part in this too. The Mavs evidently can't handle facing a zone defense. Sitting out on the perimeter all night throwing up bricks will not win many games...need to go to the basket and force the other team to foul or let you go. That is coaching and play calling.

When Cuban passed on bringing Nash back because the price was too high, didn't he essentially then give Nash money to Dampier? True or is that recounting of things exagerated in my mind?

Dead on about Terry. And he is a PUNK on top of his on floor short comings. I honestly don't think you could get a great deal of value for him. It will be a one man's trash is another man's treasure type situation getting someone else's problem in return for Terry.

I fear Diop may have played himself the past two seasons/postseasons into being severely overpaid by someone. He really has potential to be a flop if he signs a big deal and starts to get a little lazy and put on weight/get out of shape. His quickness is very important to his game so you better be sure he is the dedicated type who won't rest on his past once he signs a new deal.

What are your thoughts on Howard? I really like him as a player to be honest. I could consider trading him in the right deal, but I would have to put him in with Dirk and Harris as the guys you really want to keep.

This season has turned into Cuban's worst nightmare. First his team gets [deleted] slapped out of the playoffs by Nellies team, and now he has to watch Steve Nash hoist a championship trophy.

If we had baseball, we wouldn't have to resort to posting meaningless comments about the Chaparrals, Mavericks or whoever. Anybody bored?

I knew I forgot someone. Every team in the NBA would like to have Howard. He also was on the short list of guys who actually played (some of the time) in this series. Definite keeper. Because of his contract, he might be the most desirable player on the team.

Not as bored as I would be watching baseball played with aluminum bats.
