They know it. That's why they don't like other people saying it. LOL.

If you want to taunt our student body in our own stadium and then p!ss and moan when they retaliate, fine. That's your own business, although I can't imagine your director would be okay with that.

While with the Goin' Band in Colorado last year, I saw two good friends of mine get sent home and kicked out for yelling at CU students who were pelting us with marshmellows, pennies, rocks, hot dogs, etc. Why? Because when you're in uniform at someone else's house, you're a walking billboard for your university. You hold your head high, you play with pride, and you certainly don't yell at opposing fans. And believe me, I've seen much worse out of students at Kyle, DKR, Owens, etc. then you'll ever see at Jones.

I guess that's the difference between a band that wins National Championships (Goin' Band, 1999) and bands that don't.

At any rate, I really didn't intend to get into a yelling match here. The game went well with no major injuries on either side, and I think SMU will be much improved as the season progresses. Best of luck against OSU and TCU.

"If you want to taunt our student body in our own stadium and then p!ss and moan when they retaliate, fine. That's your own business, although I can't imagine your director would be okay with that."

We weren't p!ssing and moaning, someone posted that we shouldn't be physically assaulted in the stands, and discussion and explanation went from there. No bandsman posted to whine first. I really wouldn't have complained if he had touched me, as he would have quickly learned his lesson.

"While with the Goin' Band in Colorado last year, I saw two good friends of mine get sent home and kicked out for yelling at CU students who were pelting us with marshmellows, pennies, rocks, hot dogs, etc. Why? Well, if your University thinks that is the image your band should portray, that is fine. I am now in my third year, and have spoken recently with people going back at least 8 years, and none of us can recall a single complain from the University about our actions, on or off the field, including ::gasp:: cheering for our team, or against the other team.

"I guess that's the difference between a band that wins National Championships (Goin' Band, 1999) and bands that don't."

No, that would be the difference between bands that win National Championships (those that look and sound like highschool bands) and those who gave up trying to sound like a concert band, clarinet features, uniforms out of some random catalog, repeating shows, and other such "features" of National Champion bands over 50 years ago. Our goal is to be entertaining to the average guy in the stands, not to a UIL judge.

Granted we didn't put on our best performance saturday, but I expected to be blown away by the Tech band. I was not impressed.

I was a 'Beanie-wearer' from '88-'92 (course, once a member, always a member!) We did the same "Tech sucks" banter, "HIGH-SCHOOL BAND" chants at Amon Carter, and other chicanery that went on long before I got there, and it sounds like still resonates with the current group. It's all in fun and is part of the college game experience.

For those of you out there that would rather see the Mustang Band sit on their hands until halftime, perform, and then all leave for the concession stands like most groups do, you're freakin' nuts. Give me the hoots and hollers of the Mustang Band Spirit anytime. RahRah!

Gee, WreckEm, I never intended this to turn into a forum for attacking you. I have mostly enjoyed your posts on this board and hope you will continue to visit. I simply wanted to point out that what the Mustang Band was doing wasn't new or overly incendiary. I agree with your comments about receiving much worse treatment in places like College Station, and we won't even mention Fayetteville! (shows you how old I am) ;> )
And I really didn't notice that much of a problem around the band, but there are always those one or two guys who just have to see how obnoxious they can get. We all have them (yes, even SMU), and while I don't condone it, I have come to expect it no matter where the game is.

I think I can solve several problems at once. You know we need more women's sports to meet Title IX. Let's sponsor a rifle team. Then if anyone hassles the band, have target practice. You know first one to plink the drunken Techsun gets a gold star on their rifle. I still would prefer the Shriner look with the swords, but since that went no where, lets go with the rifle team. No more problems there. And Wreck 'Em, don't go to anymore football games, because I suspect, you'll hear "Tech Sux" every week. Heck we had all kinds of fun when I was at SMU. We wrote a nice version of the Spirit of Faggie Land. Texas Bite. And my favorite, Eat S@#t Eagles.

Well, again I apologize if I offended anyone. If you really think the Tech band was "sitting on their hands" the whole game, then I can only assume you weren't there. I'm only saying that your band would have gotten better treatment if they hadn't gone out of their way to taunt the Tech students. Not a condonement of anyone's actions, just a statement of opinion.

And also, you'll get no sympathy from me about harrassment. You have no idea what harrassment is until you've marched into Kyle Field dressed like a Matador with a big Double T on your shoulder. Image

At any rate, best of luck to SMU the rest of the way. I'll be in Ft. Worth this semester on an internship, so maybe I'll be able to drop by and catch a game or two. How much are tickets to the OSU game?

PS:

couch, what "random catalog" do you think we got those Matador uniforms out of? I take it you've seen many uniforms like those before?

ES, I hear "Tech sucks" from opposing fans every week. That's to be expected. I've never, however, heard it from an opposing band. That's what caught me (and everyone around me) off guard.

Maybe the next time the Mustang Band is in Lubbock they can get up with the local yokels and have a group gathering with a musical rendition of "Kum-bah-yah" while holding hands. Then they could bring in Stuart Smalley to remind all the tech fans that "they're 'good' enough, they're 'smart' enough and doggone it people like them" after the Mustang Band tells them that Tech Sucks so tech fans won't get mad and do bad things because they got their feelings hurt.

Like Double T after running head first into a wall, I'm a goner. Image

Never, ever? Has it really been that long since the last time the Marching Owl Band visited Lubbock? Or were they banned? Trust CPC when he tells you that you havent seen heckling from a band until you've encountered the MOB at close range. There really isnt any comparison, the rest of this is all much ado about nothing compared to an average day with the MOB. If you didnt get to see them before the SWC breakup, you've seriously missed out.
Some will tell you that a glass is half empty, and others that the same glass is half full. But all CPC really wants to know is...... does the drink taste good?

CPC - I am actually a HUGE fan of the MOB. I've seen them many times; they're very funny and very witty. The last time they were in Lubbock was hilarious - the Tech students gave them a standing ovation as I recall.

The difference? Their heckling was clever. SMU's was not. In fact, I don't remember the MOB ever telling anyone they suck. They're much too witty for that.

I really didn't intend for this to be such a big deal. You seem stunned that nobody in Lubbock liked your band - I was explaining why. Personally I thought they were a good band all things considered.

We appreciate that you did like the band, but I don't think it was a coincidence that numerous people stopped me and various others in the band to tell us how great of a job we did.

Thanks.
