The results will eventually be known since the NCAA does post the results of their investigations and they did investigate this situation. Then we will know the truth...good or bad, depending upon your outlook on this whole deal. It would seem, based upon the length of time involved, they may have actually had bigger fish to fry...for a change.
Actually, the only thing I am aware of on the NCAA website is the "major infractions" database, PK. If we are to know the results of this basketball investigation, although I do not know how the NCAA defines a "major" infraction, I suspect it will have to come from SMU.
Although now that I think about it that might be telling. If you believed Copeland's statement that he was fired for violations "more serious than what was reported in the paper," or words to that affect, maybe it would have to qualify as a major infraction. Malin's transgressions wer reported in the major infractions database, after all. But of course, we were told exactly what he did the day he was fired too.
Well if...and that is a big if...he was trying to put together a slush fund, then that would be "major"...probably. Of course no one official ever implied that he was doing that and it was probably just a rumor thrown out for the dogs to chew on.
From what I have heard, very true...and to answer one of the last posts, I really do think there was more than what was written in the paper, come on...there had to have been. I don't think even SMU would write off a coach after just 2 years based on wins and losses, look at how many Bennett has had. Hearsay is hearsay, but there was definitely more than done than what was written in the paper Dallas Mavericks - 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS!
Long live the Circle of Champions!
That's the problem, it's what we all think. Would they fire him for burgers, cheer and "incompetence"? Would they fire him perhaps for burgers, cheer and because two of his players were ineligible for half of the season? Was he trying to start a slush fund? Or was it because he had a losing record and had not recruited a break-through player in two years? Or lastly, was it because Orsini wanted Doherty and Doherty was available at that point in time? Or was it all or some of the above? These rumors will all go away, if the real truth is exposed. That said, Happy anniversary, Matt!!!
Really, if there were such a sense of outrage over his dismissal, I really didn't see it from this community. There are a couple who are grumbling because the school and the NCAA have not revealed everything. But deep down, I would bet those who may have been upset over how he was fired were not really upset that he was fired.
Jimmy was a nice guy, who was in over his head and because he had poor communication skills, he couldn't connect with kids. And if that's a problem there, then there's a problem in communicating with other elements of the SMU community, administration, alumni, etc. That's just my opinion.
I thought communicating with players was actually one of his few strengths. Thats why he got a lot of Dallas kids to stay here while he was an assistant. The administrative, every day stuff wasn't. Above I said "I think," but a few people in the know have told me pretty much the same thing, so I'd say I'm closer to knowing, than thinking. What I do know, is that we are way better off

All I know is that we knew what violations Malin was accused of on the same day he was fired, and he was a measly assistant. What's up with the double standard for a head coach? Fans deserve to know the truth. This veil of secrecy mentality is what brought on the death penalty last time around.
I agree with you, and we deserve to know what's going on. But I'm also not going to sweat over the timeframe of when this is ever going to be revealed.
They're a private institution, and they work differently than a state institution. If the compliance office has communicated fully with the NCAA over this and leaving it to the NCAA to reveal it, then we're going to have to live it. There is something to be said about "getting out in front of this", but I don't think this was one of those times. Every situation is different. I also think Tubbs was good in his time as an assistant but it's a different animal as the head coach. You can't be as buddy-buddy when you're talking with kids. It happens.
George you might want to look back at the posts at the time of Tubbs firing. There were several long and vibrant threads about this issue. There was outrage at the time. It quieted down after Doherty was hired because he was such a good hire, but there were still and still are some voices of concern about what really happened. Because of the death penalty, SMU fans are always worried when they hear NCAA is involved and want to know why we reported ourselves to the NCAA and for what reason.
