DOHERTY TO APPEAR FRIDAY ON FSN SOUTHWEST’S DFW SPORTS BEATDALLAS (SMU) --- SMU men’s basketball coach Matt Doherty will be a guest on DFW Sports Beat on Fox Sports Net Southwest on Friday, June 8. The show hosted by Brady Tinker begins at 6:30 p.m. Coach Doherty will discuss his first full season on the Hilltop, his vision for the future of Mustang basketball, and the progress of the Crum Basketball Center. The show will also air on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
For those of us who missed the interview, can someone give a recap of topics discussed?
There also needs to be a nod to whoever does men's basketball in the sports information office, for getting Coach Doherty on all these shows. Nice work. Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
He discussed each player in depth and gave both their strengths and weaknesses. Sounds like he has Walker and Harp penciled in at guards although he did say Killeen and Roberts were captains and team leaders. Said Rhodes needs some fine tuning but was a strong player. Mentioned Bamba's lightness a lot. His cheeseburger statement was "everytime Bamba eats a cheeseburger, I gain 5 lbs.". Wants to put Papa and Bamba in together and let Bamba play more on the perimeter, but Bamba has a lot to learn about defending on the perimeter. Really played up the athletic ability of the new 7 footer from Poland. He of course was positive and upbeat but talked about a foundation being built this year in recruiting and indicated next year would be one of continued building toward the desired end result. He had postive things to say about each player, of course, but did mention the "roughness" of a few that need some coaching.
I am paraphrasing a lot, but it was very upbeat yet realistic in that we will have a lot of newbies next year contributing to Divsion 1 basketball. He also said the Mavs should just keep doing what they are doing. They had the best record in the league but just did not match up well with GS or Don Nelson. Basically said do it again but try not to play GS if at all possible.
