Rivals' stars

Postby Mustang98 » Fri Jun 08, 2007 11:05 pm

I have a question about the quality of Rivals' star rankings. I was looking at our recruiting classes year by year dating back to 2002. Our 2007 class had four (4) three star recruits compared to seven (7) three star recruits in the 2003 recruiting class. Many regard 2007 as Phil Bennet's best recruiting class ever. If that is the case, does that mean Rivals is an average to sub-average evaluator of talent?

BTW, I was surprised that Boise St. only had three (3) more three star recruits than us in 2007. Boise St. didn't have any four or five star recruits. One would think they could pull in a four star recruit after their Fiesta Bowl win. If a BCS Bowl victory only scores you seven (7) three star recruits, then what does that mean for SMU if we win our conference and a BCS Bowl?

It would mean that 95-99% of 4 and 5 star players still would want to play for a BCS school. That's the way it is and will always be under this current system, IMO. However, if we were consistenly at the top of CUSA and playing in bowl games, I do think we would receive interest from the occasional 4/5 star player (a la TCU), and would have an easier time outrecruiting the Tulsas,UTEPS, and UH's of the world for more 3 stars and more premium athletes

You also need to give BSU some time. The Fiesta Bowl was on 1/1 and by then, most of the top players had already committed. Whatever bump they get from that game (and season) should appear in next year's class.
