I was glad to see that Bennett left the door open for Reggie to return. If he follows through and quits then he will regret this decision for the rest of his life. He has given a lot to the program, but he will be ashamed that he quit before his senior year. When he is an old man he will still be regretting this decision.

SMU's Carrington won't play final season

Reggie Carrington, the all-Conference USA senior linebacker expected to headline SMU’s defense this fall, has left the program.
“He’s dealing with some other issues and he’s questioning if he wants to play,” coach Phil Bennett said Thursday. “I’m not sure with everything he’s got going that football’s viable right now.

Bennett said he hadn’t “shut the door” on Carrington, but at this time does not expect the sixth-year player who was the team’s top returning tackler to play this fall. Bennett said Carrington expects to graduate at the end of the summer.

Attempts to reach Carrington were not immediately successful.

Carrington, 6-2, 240, was second on the team with 80 tackles last season. His play included 10 tackles-for-loss, four sacks, four pass breakups and a forced fumble while starting all 12 games in 2006. He earned second team (media) and third team (coaches) all-conference honors.

Bennett had said during the spring season that Carrington would be a key figure this fall, during which the Mustangs hope to play in their first bowl game since 1984.

Bennett said that he and Carrington discussed the situation on Wednesday, but that the decision was not a surprise.

Carrington, of Tomball, Texas, learned this spring that he had been granted a sixth-year of eligibility. He took a medical redshirt because of a torn pectoral muscle in 2004 and wrist injuries forced him to redshirt as a true freshman.

“He’s fought the fight,” Bennett said. “He’s been good for SMU football.”

Carrington and senior linebackers Wilton McCray and Tony Hawkins figured to form a strong spot for a unit with a new-look defensive line.

Bennett said senior Damon Hurst would be the leading candidate to fill Carrington’s role at middle linebacker, with redshirt freshmen Ryan Moczygemba and Pete Fleps in the mix.

“Naturally, I hate that he’s not going to be there,” Bennett said, “but I think we’re going to be OK.”

I can understand the regret thing, but playing college football for 6 years has got to be tough, especially if you do not have NFL aspirations and you're already finished with your degree.

For those of you that disagree, remember three years ago when we got shellacked over in Ft. Worth, 44-0? That all started w/ DD Lee getting hurt in the first game against Tech. Downhill from there. We wound up having a patchwork LB corps and the likes of Lucky DeLay playing DT.
