I actually have a year of eligiblity left but it will be too hot for me at the Tech game.

Reggie CarringtonModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Didn't they want to get that mid-term Justin Smart kid from Marshall on the field this year as a freshman-moved him to DE in the spring and raved about him-I wonder if they move him back. Isn't he supposed to be 6-4-maybe a tad large for LB but sounds like a possibility..
I think they really like Smart at DE, and can only assume they'd like to leave him there. I'd guess Hurst is the man in the middle. He might not be that tall, but he's fairly thick and runs pretty well .... if he can hit, I don't care if he's 4-foot-9 or 6-foot-9.
This is the proverbial "big game" for Justin. The guy is downright fun to watch too. Marshall ran/runs a 3-3-5 defense. Smart played upright on the strongside most of the time, but would do a switcharoo with the strongside DE as an defensive audible. I watched him get his bell rung once, shake it off after a play, run in the next play and he was upfield on the QB and FB so fast it surprised even the defensive coordinator. He hit the FB so fast that the guy wasn't set and flew backwards, and Smart was on the QB so quickly and so hard he knocked the kid's helmet off. When he was recruited, Coach Southern (now at Belton HS) made the comment to me that he and Bennett both felt that Smart deserved a serious look at MLB. If he could gain 10 lbs without losing a step on his speed, he'd be strong at that position, and he would be strong early. Perhaps he will get a chance. If I recall, I think Bordano was 205 lbs playing that position, no? He was certainly light, but that tells me it definitely can be done. Agreed. We are deep at LB. We have xfers from A&M (Kennemer), Tech (Ellis) & Arizona (Garcy), I think. We don't know about these guys, do we? Strodtman is supposed to be strong, and I think he is greyshirt also. Fleps is supposed to be good as well. Not to mention there are two or three other guys behind them. I am concerned about Carrington's loss. I am. Nothing like having a 23 yr old on your roster. Bigger, generally faster, a whole lot more experienced. He was a serious, stable, consistent player. I can lament his loss. But the defense has some guys we can play. I am real concerned about QB depth now, and I will remain so unless we have 4 scholarship players ready to play. A redshirt sophomore, a redshirt freshman with a gimp arm, and a freshman just isn't good odds. "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." I believe K.J. Ellis is a safety. The other 2 players you mentioned are extremely unproven and are probably still not in the mix for heavy minutes at LB Dallas Mavericks - 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS!
Long live the Circle of Champions!
I don't assume to know anything about the reasons why Reggie is leaving and Slater as well. However, I have read these posts and do not agree with the sunshine/optimism that "we don't need them". Every pre-season report that I have read indicates that Carrington is our #2 OVERALL player, behind Justin. Speaking of 'behind Justin', losing Slater is a big blow as we have zero experience behind our QB now and it is very rare that a starting QB makes it through the entire season healthy.
Any team that loses its #2 player is in trouble. And as much as it hurts me to say, we are not UT or USC where we have impact players just waiting in the wings. We have very few impact players at all, so I question where our defense and especially our LB corps is headed this year losing our top defender, a legit all- conference LB. I am a die-hard pony, but the optimism I had for this season is greatly impacted by these two players abruptly quitting this team. any details on the reggie situation would be helpful. i'm a believer in phil, but if he is losing players that we desperately need that is a real shame. thanks.
Good call -- Strodtman is very strong. For those who were around a dozen or so years ago (damn, has it been that long?), he looks a little like David Ellen. Thick and strong as a bull, although Strodtman looks significantly quicker and faster. If I'm not mistaken, he played on the outside in the spring, though, so that would involve a move, too.
I remember watching Ellen's Marcus Marauders in the state championship game and then thinking what a plus it was that SMU was gonna get him. What happened to his college career?
