Selling the Product.

Postby Cadillac » Tue Jun 26, 2007 12:14 pm

Here's one thing that confused me last year.

The radio broadcast of the games were carried by the ticket last season. Presumably, the ticket generates income through the selling of advertising time during the broadcast day.

So they have a product: SMU football. They've clearly paid money for the rights to broadcast the games (am I wrong here?)

So regardless of their personal lack of interest in the games, don't they have a financial incentive to attract listenership to the SMU games? And its not like the product was so unbearable that they couldn't find something positive to say about it. Yet they still seemed embarrassed that they had to carry the games.

Do local stations draw lots, with the short man having to broadcast SMU games or what?

The Ticket has been ashamed of carrying SMU games for quite some time. I no longer live in Dallas, but it seemed there were only a few sports AM stations when I was there to choose from. In Houston there are three sports radio stations along with two other AM news stations. Among those five, Rice and UH seemed to get picked up without any moaning and groaning from the station. I am sure another sports AM station or news AM station in Dallas wouldn't mind having our beloved Mustangs on the air.

Not necessarily. I don't know the specifics of our deal, but it's not uncommon for the school to actually pay the radio station (essentially buying the air time) to broadcast games. Then the school ensures that someone is carrying their games and they can sell ad packages.

Again, I don't know what kind of deal we have with the ticket, but it's not a given that they pay us anything.

That would make sense then, if SMU owned the ad time in the broadcast and paid the station for the airtime. That way the ticket has no interest in what happens during those 3 hours.
