What are the keys to a SMU win on Saturday?

Postby ponyte » Mon Sep 08, 2003 11:06 am

It sounds as if BU has problems with offense, defense and the kicking game. They have a big O-line and some big skill people.

What does SMU need to do to win on Saturday?

Being in Arkansas, I get no news on SMU or Texas football so any information or opinions would be appreciated.

Ponyte:

We will get plenty of Texas football news this week. Just not the kind we want. I feel blessed if we get the SMU score listed in the ADG.

I think the key to the game is not to let mistakes rule the day. I hate to hear coaches, commentators, writers, etc. say a team has to play a perfect game to have a chance to win. No team has ever played a perfect game. Did Miami play a perfect game against Florida. There is more to it than that. The key to winning is playing full out, no mater what happens--in life and in football. If something bad happens keep your head up and keep going full speed. Bad things will happen. Winners overcome them. End of sermon.

Mrydel, so true. However, if an Arkansas scout team player has an infected pimple, we will get a page 3 story about it in the ADG.

I am a little anxious about the Ark-Texas game, as I know if Ark loses we will have to endure about 2 weeks of hearing how the refs blow it for Ark. At least when we lose we accept that it is our own doing.

I think this is an interesting machup.

Baylor's strength offensively is their massive line and the ability to throw the ball. Their running game is suspect. SMU's secondary will be more healthy than during the Tech game. I think it will be interesting to see two things:

- Will our speed on the end be able to disrupt their passing game (i.e. are their guys fat and slow so we can put pressure on the QB)? This will help us defend the pass. Stansbury is a key in this game.

- Does Baylor use a spread set or more traditional formations? The more LB's SMU keeps in the game, the better off they are. If Baylor uses a spread set and gets more DB's in the game, SMU will be less effective defensively.

Offensively, there are several questions:

- Can the Mustangs maintain a balanced offense (which they had in the first quarter against Tech) for an entire game. KK can't do it on his own, and neither can Bartel. We need a balanced offense.

- The big question is the Oline. They really struggled against Tech. How will they handle the Baylor line? The tackle rotation might do fine, and we get Hargis back, which is a big bonus. Eidson is the key to the line, so keep an eye on him.

So, basically, I think we should keep an eye on Standsbury and Eidson on the lines, and I think that will be an indication of successful the ponies are.

Game prediction: This is a matchup of two struggling teams. The team the screws up the least wins (blown coverages for big plays, missed field goals, and turnovers). That being the case, it will be interesting to see how the coaches come out to play. Do they play conservative, waiting for the other team to mess up, or do they try and jump on the other team early and go for the quick emotional knockout?

well sad to say from a BU fan, but probably all you have to do is rush our quarterback. He's mistake prone. Get some QB Hurries, and you'll do fine

Ponyte:

At least if Ark gets beat it will give us about 2 weeks of relief from talk about "the call". You would think that SMU sends a token player to every Arkansas game just to sneak onto the field and interfere with a receiver and run off again without a call. I thought after Stoerners fumble against Tennessee it would end but not a week goes by that I do not hear about "the call" from someone. Of course it may be because a week does not go by without me reminding the Arkansas folks that they dropped us from their schedule because they had too much trouble beating us.

All posters, please note: INEPT is the word for the day. HixsontoLevias has now used this word in TWO separate threads. Image Big Bird is proud.

..MrMust65, HL uses the word "inept" twice and you come back with some weak [deleted] retort....is his use of that word sort of like your incessant, "in 1965 I was chosen to be, blah, blah, blah..??" Who does Sam Hou play this wekkend? Are you going?

If you really want the teamto be successful you might want to spend less time insulting the fans we do have, especially the ones that did not go to SMU, the student body and alums alone can't fill the stadium, and if we wantto be truly successful we need to build a huge fan base encompassing the entire state so that people will want to watch us on TV, giving us more TV and ticket revenue and allowing us to compete with the BCS boys. So please from now on, let's be constructive with our criticism instead of trying to pick a fight.

Mr. "HixsontoLevias": Its pretty ironic that a guy celebrating Jerry Levias in his board name would be so unaccepting of others. Who cares where the guy went to school? Its not like he went to a rival school like TCU or something. You have given us your illustrious Mustang Club resume before. Thats great, if guys like you who had a little influence back in the 70s and 80s would have had a freakin clue about what it takes to compete, maybe SMU would have built a respectable football facility before the 21st century. And if SMU had done that or anything else constructive, maybe we wouldn't be in the position today where you obviously feel threatened by SHSU.

MrMustang1965 - Just Arrest him! You are alright with me! Let's have a contest and see who's the loudest at the games. Oh - but we probably can't hear him and I don't think they cheer up in the "Private Boxes".
