I can see that (Estridge). Estridge is probably as big a homer as Swann is, but he's not nearly as demonstrative (i.e. yelling at his broadcast partner, yelling at refs and hitting the broadcast table - although that is a funny clip when the play it on the Ticket). I think I'd have a hard time listening to him even if I were an SMU grad but maybe not. We're all homers after all.
The other difference (in addition to not being as demonstrative, etc.) is that Swann actually played football, and at the school he's calling games for. Estridge, for all of the lip-locks he gets on Patterson and Tommy Blake and the rest over there, sounds as if every game is the first time he has ever seen football. An incomplete pass (if by the opposition) can be exciting enough to cause that guy a stroke, and he'll sleep through a 99-yard return (by the other team). Swann, at least, acknowledges great plays by either team and mistakes, as well, albeit more forcefully when made by the opposition. Estridge sounds like he's a member of some secret club (on the Galloway show, too). Swann is a homer but he's our homer and an absolute expert on the game. Estridge is a bumbling buffoon who might as well call play-by-play for a quadruple bypass, for all the expertise and analysis he brings. (To be fair, Estridge's partner - I never bothered to learn his name - has an annoying voice, but is a pretty damn good analyst.)
