Can anyone provide an update on Patrick Strodtman?

Ah, the enthusiasm!

Strodtman certainly looked impressive in spring ball. He worked some inside, but most of the days I was at practice, he lined up on the outside. Physically, he looks like a MLB candidate — not too tall, but thick (I hear he's somewhere between 240 and 250 now), but he runs very well. Faster than most of the shorter, thicker MLBs (i.e. Zac Thomas). How good he'll be this year — hard to say, but on the days when I saw him, he did seem to be around the ball, and get up from the bottom of the pile, quite often.

I've always found it's easier to PITY someone than to "pitty" someone. Not sure what that means.

I like the fact that in high school, he played DE, meaning he knows how to rush the passer, and safety, meaning he can drop into coverage.

Former head coach Cody Vanderford on Patrick Strodtman:

"Patrick was by far our most valuable player on special teams. He was usually the deep guy on our kickoff return team, and on our kickoff team, he was in on probably 70 percent of the tackles – he was incredible. He was on our punt coverage team, too.

“He played a little on offense, too – he was our fullback in goal-line sets, and he would have been one of our best receivers if we’d played him there, too, because he had the best hands on the team – he has great hands.

“This year, he made one of the most spectacular interceptions I’ve seen. He was rushing the quarterback, and the quarterback threw it in the direction where he was coming from. He’s coming in as fast as he can, reached up and plucked it out of the air with one hand, and then he broke about eight tackles as he returned it about 40 yards. It was amazing.

“Patrick’s a very good blitzer. We used him for that quite a bit, bringing him off the edge. SMU is recruiting him as a linebacker, and that’s probably a better fit for him. He loves hitting, and he’s extremely strong, a very physical player. He’s sort of a Dat Nguyen type – he’s not 6’2” or 6’3” but he runs extremely well, with very little wasted motion. He played defensive end as a junior, and even though he probably wasn’t even 200 pounds, he was very effective because he’s so quick. This year, because of his speed, we moved him back (to safety).

Strodtman is one player I've really been looking forward to seeing. We've always had smaller, fast LBs, and many of them have been fine. But I'd love to see this guy just start crushing guys, like Vic Viloria did back in the day.
