Southwest Conference Championships

Postby ThadFilms » Fri Jul 20, 2007 5:48 pm

Interesting, and telling. I was very excited to see where SMU ranked in SWC championships, in both football and basketball. You know, there are many of us who feel that we are entitled to more, a better product on the field/court. That we are a storied program... it was in equal parts heartening and disheartening to find that to be all to true:

Now I certainly knew that we had done plenty of winning in the past, and I was aware of many conference championships in both sports, but to see the numbers and put them in perspective... well yet again, I'm amazed by the devastation of both death penalty and the policies that it inspired.

At the time of our last SWC (football) championship we had just moved ourselves into a three-way tie for second in all time SWC (Football) Championships, with A&M and Arkansas - of course Texas was WAY out in front then with 22 titles - but seeing those numbers (I was a young pup back then) really proves what I had felt as a kid, but never had anything other than intuition to back it up with -

Texas was the evil empire - the Yankees, the Lakers, the Dallas Cowboys (but of course I liked the Cowboys), of our conference, and thus there was no bigger game then the Texas game.

Arkansas and A&M we're on our level. TCU was a notch below... and well, Rice, Baylor, and Tech were our "whipping boys". (Houston was the new kid on the block... that I really didn't care too much about.)

Oh how the mighty have fallen. But it is nice to look back and actually see the tradition that I remember from when I was a kid.

Let's go out and beat our old whipping boys.... Texas Tech.

...........

Of equal interest were the basketball results. Having gone to SMU basketball games, I've seen all the banners, etc. And I know we have had a final 4 team... but to see us at third... for a school that perceived as a kid as a football school, was impressive.

Tech did not join the SWC until what 1967 ? Houston joined in 1976. So there SWC championships were obviously less. I was somewhat surprised to the Mustangs 4th in SWC football championships and 3rd as conference basketball champs as well.
