And here's your new SMU Football ad campaign!

Postby MrMustang1965 » Tue Jul 24, 2007 3:03 pm

Wanna see the new SMU football advertising campaign? Here is what appears to be the slogan (ala "Mustang Mania"): PONY UP

The graphic will be the running red Mustang with a black arrow - like on a football chalkboard diagram - to its right and pointed up.

I stopped by the football office today to pick up some wallet schedules and this is what's printed on them along with the 2007 football schedule poster (at the bottom). I asked the guy behind the desk if this is the marketing campaign that's been developed by the Richards Group and he said, "I think so."

Again, not definitive. But if it is we should start seeing the billboards and ad campaign kicking into gear in the next couple of weeks, according to outgoing athletic marketing director Richard Sweet. Stay tuned.

Dadgummit. I was hoping for "In Your Face Football, Part Deaux"... the one with the Cave Man scowl.

Those were also on the mailers about the football luncheon, so you can see it on there.

Will people unaffiliated with SMU know to associate a red mustang with the word "pony"?

Will UNT grads know to associate an arrow with the word "up"?
It's a crappy job but someone's gotta do it.

I will confess my ignorance here and now. When I saw the graphic, I had no idea what it was supposed to mean so I asked the guy in the football office what it was and he said, "Pony Up" with this kind of expression on his face >

Hmmm, I associate the words "Pony Up" with paying a debt. Are they implying that I've until now been a free-loading fan, but now I must pay up? I'm not sure how I feel about this.

This is a bad idea, imho. I figured with all the dollars floating around at Smoo they could afford a decent p.r. firm. Perhaps I'm wrong.

I saw some Mustang Mania (original design) t-shirts the other day. They were NEW, but they had that distressed/vintage look to them. Maybe Mustang Mania could be our backup plan. It will be new to the young'uns and a welcome recycling of something successful for the oldies.

The Richards Group is the p.r. firm handling the SMU account. David Hall - an S.M.U. alum - is handling the account, I believe.

Remember: The Richards Group is the same p.r./mktg. firm that handled the Baylor Bears' ill-fated ad campaign last year.

I have a good friend that works at the Richards Group and let me tell you they are a bunch of morons. She told me this idea a couple of months ago and actually thought that it was a genius idea. She said that they tested it out on the SMU grads in the office and they were all pleased at the response. FYI about my friend she went to one SMU game her entire time at SMU and would not know a football from a hockey puck. The other SMU grads at the Richards group that i know are the exact same.

Did they all graduate from the Temmerlin Advertising Institute at S.M.U.?

And remember, folks...this is what Richard Sweet has worked so [deleted] for the past 6 months before bailing out and returning to Southwest Airlines. What a crock.

I still liked my idea of reversing the Home Depot spots and selling:

We can do it.....You can help!!!

Shows confidence and asks for support.

Just need some deep pockets to handle the lawsuits for infringement or whatever else the lawyers would call it.

Why do we do this to ourselves?

MM65: I'll have to ask the "Ms." where we saw it. It was some little specialty-type store... not a Sports Authority or Academy. I'll find out. Sounds like we're gonna need them to "Cover Up" "Pony Up".

Hmm, they should have hired me. For a fraction of the cost I could have come up with something better than "Pony Up." And Baylor? Come on, how is that a good measuring stick when analyzing potential firms?
