In my opinion a redshirt should not be burned until a coach has made a commitment to play a freshman at least half the series at his position or of course if it is required because of injuries or for the benefit of the team. Once that decision is made the freshman needs to be a major part of the team. I have no problem "wasting a redshirt" on a freshman who is the best player at his position and earns a starting position. For example, Sturdivant and McCann. I'd like to see those players identified even earlier though and stick with the decision.
I think he did well with McCann but didn't he limit Sturdivant's time the first year? Seems like that was a questionable move. Not that he played him but that he did not play him enough. I am all for any skill position true freshman playing if he is the best to put out there. Lineman need at least a year to muscle up and mature (physically). That is why you need to get an over abundance of lineman so you can both redshirt and alternate. That can make a good back look great or an average passer become a quality one.
