Crazy thing is rivals didn't even have him as considering SMU prior to this commitment, nor did there show to be an offer. Must've been a quick courtship.

I have to assume this is a simple mistake or your idea of a joke. This Braden was a sixth grader in 2004...thus a ninth grader in 2007. I can also show you a profile on another Braden Smith, 6-5, 205lb WR...University of British Columbia if you are interested.

His father Scott Smith actually coached at SMU for a short period in the early 1990s. Grew up in the shadows of SMU-attended SMU sports camps as a kid but then went on to play at Baylor. He was the QB at HP immediately prior to McIllhenny. Rivals had Braden measured at 6-0.3. No other offers mentioned. No rating-in fact Rivals has never done a Report on him. Hopefully they will do a report soon.

Jackets just miss state 7-on-7 championship


Lose to Colleyville Heritage in title game

July 21, 2006 — COLLEGE STATION - The stage was set last Friday when 64 high school 7-on-7 football teams from across Texas descended on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station to determine a state champion.

After two days of stiff competition before an estimated 15,000 spectators, only two teams were left standing - Rockwall and Colleyville Heritage.

Heritage, which had claimed the consolation title the last two years, captured the top prize this time with a 58-42 final-game victory over the Yellowjackets.

Both teams actually lost in pool play before rolling through the championship bracket. Heritage was defeated by Abilene 48-27 and Rockwall lost to Bandera 41-35.

The Jackets ended pool play in a 3-way tie with Bandera and Spring Westfield, but advanced on the basis of most points scored. Rockwall tallied 104, Bandera 102 and Westfield 100.

The Yellowjackets kicked off play Friday with a 27-26 win against an athletic Spring Westfield squad.

All-tournament selection Braden Smith fired touchdown strikes to Aaron Onley, Tony Dabney, Mark Ulbik and all-tournament pick Bobby Taylor to spark the Jackets opening win. He also connected with Marcus Mathis for a pair of key extra points and with Taylor for the final point after.

In the Bandera loss the Jackets allowed two long TD completions to give the Class 3A Bulldogs a 14-0 cushion.

Smith hit Taylor for three touchdowns and Dabney for two, but it wasn't enough to offset the early deficit.

Rockwall bounced back strong, however, with a 42-18 win over Canton to end pool play.

Key interceptions by Josh Robinson, Michael Patterson and Kirks McCoy put the offense in position to score points.

Smith completed three TD aerials to Dabney, two to Taylor and one to Cole Wardell to send the Jackets to Saturday's championship rounds.

Rockwall opened Round 1 of the championship bracket with a 27-21 victory over Tyler John Tyler.

The Jackets then defeated Hebron 40-34 in the second round to set up a quarterfinal matchup with Port Arthur Memorial. Rockwall defeated Memorial 37-33 to advance to the semifinals against the defending champions, and only team to have won the championship twice, Baytown Lee.

In what turned out to be one of the top games of the tournament, it was a defensive effort that proved to be the decisive play.

With the score knotted at 41-41 and with 20 seconds remaining, defensive back Ryan Craven intercepted a Lee pass to give the Jackets a chance for the win.

Smith hit Dabney on a wheel route at the 10 in the waning seconds. An interference penalty as time expired gave Rockwall one final play.

It was enough, as Smith drilled Taylor in the end zone for a 47-41 Jacket victory and a first-ever trip to the finals.

But, it was the Colleyville Heritage Panthers day as the 2-time consolation winners bested Rockwall 58-42 to claim the 2006 championship.

Heritage adds its name to the elite list of previous winners: Southlake Caroll (1998), North Mesquite (1999), Celina (2000), Baytown Lee (2001), Cinco Ranch (2002), Odessa Permian (2003), Tyler Lee (2004) and Baytown Lee (2005).

Katy Taylor defeated Katy for the consolation title. Taylor bested West Orange Stark and Katy edged North Mesquite in overtime to reach the consolation final.
