Smith led Rockwall to the QuaterFinals in the 2007 7 on 7 Tournament and Rivals had this comment. Rockwall quarterback Braden Smith continues to show tremendous accuracy as he did in leading Rockwall to the 7-on-7 state final last year.

Game Comment by Tim MacMahon of the DMN in his High School Football Blog:

QB Braden Smith is tough, smart, accurate and throws the ball with zip. There have been several plays where you can see him going through his progressions or waiting until his receiver gets to just the right spot to deliver the pass.

I'm of the Steve Spurrier school of thought that says you can't have too many talented QBs. After Willis, we have Rhodes, Turner, Wilkerson and now Smith. Either this recruiting class or next year's needs to add another QB. If any of these guys move to another position or leave the team for any reason, we need to add two more.

Welcome to SMU, Braden!

Comment from our Litt' Buddy overcusser based on his performance at the NTSU camp:

Among the camp standouts was Rockwall senior Braden Smith, who continues to show a strong, accurate arm and his setting visits for several college camps the rest of the summer ...

Q and A of Smith prior to his Junior Year

By DAVE LANCE / The Dallas Morning News

Smith is entering his first season as a starting varsity quarterback. His dad, Scott Smith, is Rockwall's head coach. Braden started seven games on junior varsity last season and went undefeated. He was brought up to varsity and played the last three games at outside linebacker.

What's the biggest difference between playing linebacker and quarterback?

On the defensive side of the ball, you don't want to say it's less thinking, but at quarterback, it's a whole lot of thinking. On defense, you can play faster and be more aggressive. At quarterback, sometimes you've got to be aggressive, but sometimes you've got to use touch.

What are the pros and cons of playing for your father?

The pros are we have a great relationship. I know him well, we read each other well, and I really enjoy it. There are no cons.

Does he yell at you?

Sometimes. But he doesn't really yell at his quarterbacks at practice. It's more during film meetings. He sees his quarterback as his head guy. You've got to be the leader. So he tries to not get on him more in practice.

You played in the 7-on-7 state football championships, where Rockwall lost to Colleyville Heritage in the final. Talk about that experience.

We had a slow start in pool play. We were 1-1 going into the third game, and then the defense started playing awesome. They were all over the field. We stepped up our game and won our third game, against Canton. We were 2-1 in pool play and then 4-1 the next day. The biggest advantage of 7-on-7 is you can work on your timing. Defensively, you can run a bunch of coverages.

Does a part of you still want to play linebacker?

Maybe a little bit, but quarterback is what I really like.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

I think what I do well is see the coverage, and I hit my target. One thing I could work on is my speed a little bit and being more of a running threat. I think I'm more of a power threat, going up the middle.

What are your goals?

The team goal is to win district. Winning a state championship would be great. My personal goal is to have a good season and help the seniors reach their goals. My long-term goal is to get a Division I scholarship.
Crazy thing is rivals didn't even have him as considering SMU prior to this commitment, nor did there show to be an offer. Must've been a quick courtship.
..................I'm sure this recruit, QB Braden Smith, went to our recent camp and probably decided he liked it here. We have picked up some good athletes who attended our last camp. Braden sounds like a good QB prospect. His father, Scott Smith was a great High School/College QB who played at Baylor when Baylor had alot of Bowl teams in SWC.

Braden Smith makes Texas Football's Top 300 list and is one of their Top 20 Quarterbacks. Texas Football measurements are 6-1, 170 lb., and 4.7 forty.

I'm guessing he adds some weight and lowers his 40 time a little once Vic Viloria and his staff get ahold of the guy.

Welcome to SMU, Braden!
