Seriously... those of you being negative - I think you guys are being negative for the sake of being negative. I think you guys are looking for things to not like.
You know what? It's simple. It's clean and it already has people talking.
(I mean if wanted to complain, not sold on the font, nor the quarter comic talk bubble.... but I really don't care.... it's an ad campaign, and I like the roll out... I know there will be a lot more.)
Hey Stallion, correct me if I am wrong... but I don't remember 'SMU' being on those Mustang Mania bumper stickers? Just curious. Also, have you read The Tipping Point? I'd be extremely interested to get your take on the tipping point vis a vis Mustang Mania.
Speaking of the tipping point, I think SMU fandom/football is on the verge of one.

Would you like a cookie? Seriously, though...will the non-SMU fan/person driving down Central Expressway know that these billboards are for S.M.U.? What's to distinguish them from - say - a new Arena Football League team coming to town? Or the Richardson J.J. Pearce High School Mustangs? If S.M.U. is trying to 'brand' itself in Dallas - and other markets - then the letters "S.M.U." or the words "Southern Methodist University" should be on there somewhere.
I for one was wondering how/why McAllen Memorial is advertising in Dallas

Someone
Must/Might
Understand
these billboards...
ill admit, their clever and catchy. and advertising these days isn't like it used to be in the 90s. many commercials/billboards don't even make sense these days but the point of them is to grab the viewers attention, and if they do that, then it means it has worked...just look at all those weird spirite commericials...they make no sense but yet are somewhat catchy and eye grabing...although I do feel that the ad should have "SMU FOOTBALL" somewhere on it...people can connect the helmet to football but it would still be a somewhat good idea to put that on it.

They're not bumper stickers but I did find these in my stash of S.M.U. stuff. You'll see S.M.U. imprinted on the Mustang. I'm pretty sure the bumper stickers did, too.

Why can people not understand this is just the beginning of a full advertising campaign. If you want to hate it please have the respect to wait until the entire campaign is unveiled and then criticize it.
Come on down to DiamondM's tailgate...and Kiki will give you a cookie.

Mustang98 wrote:Can anyone elaborate and compare the Mustang Mania campaign of the late 1970's to the Pony Up campaign? I sense some similarities in terms of SMU's aim and the catchiness of the slogans respectively.
Although I think Stallion will be proven right how can you compare the two when one has completely run a successful course and the other has barely begun. My broken record plays nothing but "wait unitl you see the full campaign".

The people on this board do not count. We talked about SMU before the ads came out.

I like the dark horse billboard...still don't like the tailgate billboard. I don't think people are going to have a problem knowing that it is SMU that is being advertised. I just wonder if they are going to encourage people to come to games. It would be nice to have a website or a phone number listed on the billboard, but maybe that's a plan for later.

Stallion wrote:There are no comparisons. Mustang Mania was the greatest College Sports Promotion in the History of College Football covered by every major sports magazine, many national news magazines and just about every newspaper in the country while so far Pony Up is a couple of billboards. Seriously its just not comparable. Its high points: 1) The Jerry Lewis Bowl supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association which garned National attention; 2) 6,000 to 60,000 in attendance increse in successive games against Rice; 3) Ford Motor Co. and other game Sponsorship which helped increase attendance even against schools like TCU, NTSU, Rice and Baylor to between 55,000-65,000; 4) Cheryl Tiegs and Morgan Fairchild as Honorary Homecoming Queens; 5) probably in the neighborhood of 100,000 Mustang Mania bumper stickers posted throughout the city which had a habit of showing up in the far reaches of the globe; 6) increased visiability which along with Clements' payroll allowed SMU to recruit the Best Team Money could Buy-Never could have happened without Mustang Mania; 7) attracted approximately 30,000 extra fans to each SMU game in its heyday until Bob Hitch essentially shut down the giveaways in 1981; SMU cut a single also called Mustang Mania("Mustang Mania-its in the air-its everywhere-if you got the luck and you got the knack-you can be a Mustang Maniac")
In reference to point #7, was Hitch and SMU spending more than they were taking in (gate, concessions, etc.) to get that extra 30,000 fans?
