thefamousguy wrote:The bottom line is that this Ad campaign SUCKS! If you're a well known brand and you're at your peak you can afford to be a little vague in your approach to marketing. Here at SMU we're trying to rebuild our brand and attract new fans. Therefore the message needs to be more straightforward. The Richards Group is commiting "Highway Robbery" with this horrible campaign and you know it must have been expen$ive.
How is it vague? There is a giant SMU football helmet on the billboard. Should they have written a paragraph explaining the pros about coming to an SMU football game? How about an outline of all the things that happen at an SMU football game? Oooh... I know. Let's dress Peruna up like Uncle Sam and have him say in a cartoon bubble, "We need you to come to the SMU football games." Or maybe we can dress him up like Smokey the Bear and have him say, "Only you can prevent SMU from bowling with your absence." Maybe it'll be like Motel 8 and say, "We'll leave a seat open for ya."
I think labeling the campaign as highway robbery is extreme, but what do I know. Maybe you've come to this conclusion based on your "expert" opinion and omnipotent knowledge and feelings of the population of the greater Dallas area.

I usually think these campaigns are worthless, but I like the look and feel of this one I don't think it is at all vague unless you are an idiot, which is not our target market.
I have had several people ask me about it and they all knew it was SMU football related. You have to do something to cut though the noise in a market the size of Dallas - it is very saturated - so I am intriqued to see the rest of the campaign - which I have not been since Mustang Mania.
I like the Boulevard line - it is just saying it is different then the standard tailgate - which is not snobby unless you are looking for it - some folks just have a chip on their sholder and a hang up on the whole snobby thing.

"We boulevard" - come on. SMU is supposed to be an institute of higher education. You mean to tell me we are using improper English on school-approved advertising? How sad...
I have only seen the "dark horse" billboard. Honestly, I thought it was a preview and subtle hint the helmet would no longer be dark and would change to white. Sounds like we are out of luck on that one too if the other billboards are using the crappy blue helmet.
If the jerseys are really a lighter blue and the helmet is still a darker blue we are going to look really stupid.

Uniforms don't change until next year. Our home jersey has been red for several years now so the color of the helmet does not necessarily have to change. The current helmet is good looking as far as I'm concerned, but will, like most things in life, probably change too. Time will tell.

My Little Mustangs will be sporting the following this season. I hate the blue helmets.

The psychology of the reaction to this ad campaign on this board is fascinating. I think we all want so badly to win based on the past 20 years of history that we're attacking anything anyone tries to do to improve things.
It's a good, solid campaign that will put butts in seats. It's generating a buzz that we haven't had around here in a long, long time. Chill.

DFFH: Scroll back up in this thread to see photos of both billboards.

Noticed this afternoon that the billboard over Dickey's Barbecue is now gone. That was quick.
