Realistic season goals?

Postby SMU2007 » Thu Aug 16, 2007 11:31 am

What are realistic goals for the season? we have been such an incredibly mediocre team for the last several years and with all this youth, should we expect anything this year or just expect to build and possibly do something the next year?

I think the main goal should be to get the young guys as much pt as possible and season them for next year.

Gonna be a tough but fun year. Thing that makes it really tough though is Memphis is gonna be invincible the next 3-4 years which means all our new kids will probably have to always be playing for second place their whole SMU career.

Not a knock on Doherty or the Mustangs, but just the simple fact that you could have the #2 in the whole nation and still be picked to finish 2nd in CUSA just because of the team Memphis has assembled. Maybe some of them will leave early and deplete Memphis a bit after this year....

I would look for a record similar to last years but I think the enthusiam and excitement will continue to increase and will be fun to watch 7 new players.

I am ready to stick it out for the long haul and I like the direction the basketball program is going. Tournament bids (NIT and/or NCAA within 3-5 years)....conference championship within 4-7 years. That is my realistic expectation.

I would think that .500 in conference would be a very good goal for this team this year. Its young and will make mistakes. A winning season overall would be part of that goal. I think we have some talent in this group and ought to be able to improve on last year's record substantially. With two games each against Memphis and Houston a .500 record will be tough to get and would be a good aspiration for this team.

That's not always true, only about 94% of the time.

My goal is to watch as much of Mike Walker as possible. Hope to see Bennie Rhodes deliver some highlight dunks this year.

Top two in Conference USA — maybe conference champion. Deep run in conference tournament, maybe winning it. NCAA bid.

I have heard of the new drug cheese that is all over Dallas now but I have not heard of anyone getting high on Walker.

I hope I am too.

If he can distribute the ball and play defense, that's all I ask. Just get the ball to the right people. But we know that he should he play this year, there will be the dreaded freshmen mistakes.

To be playing at a higher level at the end of the season than the beginning........

Regarding the Walker kid, he is getting good reviews from his teammates for whatever that is worth...........

We do have some new talent to work with. We have a good coach to assemble the talent and put in the right places. We will be competitive in most games. I think we will surprise some with some wins but also some losses. I will be there for all home games and some away. I am just going to go along for the ride and hope there is excitement a plenty...Go Mustangs!!!

jtstang,

There was one national amateur bb guru -- someone may find his name -- who had said in a write-up on our signing class in May that Walker was a pretty good defender.

Thought you would like to know.

Think Mike Walker.
