Very impressive on the offensive side. Willis, Sanders, freshman Aldrick Robinson, and DeMyron who averaged 16 yards a carry (on three carries).
And we had two freshmen with sacks on the defensive side of the ball. Willis really stood out. 264 yards of offense. Not bad for a guy who wasn't going to play much.
Devin Lowery was not suited up tonight, anyone have info? DeTrain continues to run hard. Dorsey showed some surprising burst around the corner. Freshman receiver Aldrick Robinson continues to play well and caught a long td pass from Justin. Sanders had a couple of highlight catches, including a bomb. I thought Justin looked really good, and looks to me like Zack earned the #2 qb spot. I agree with an earlier post that Columbus looks quicker. Defense?........well we still have some work to do, but the corners look like we'll be better than last year.
I thought that the combination of willis/Givins and Sanders looked pretty good when out there. Of course since it's a scrimage, so it could be the the secondary was just that bad. Though, for the record, both Givens and Sanders made some great catches out there regardless of coverage.
They had Terrence Wilkerson wearing #7 and playing QB with the 12th unit out there. I found that interesting. Other freshmen of note: Darrius Bell looked pretty bad out there, but Ryan Leonard was making quite a few plays. The kicking game looked solid with Morestead hitting all but one of his FG attemts, and Brayden Harris was getting his kickoffs near the goal line. I wish I had more for you, but I'm next to useless in scouting. I'm much more of a numbers guy. -CoS
I don't think so. I think that Bennett is leaning towards Logan Turner after tonight. I'm a Zach Rhodes guy, but I'd bet money that Turner will be the #2. -CoS
For those of us who were and weren't there:
Neither Rhodes nor Turner showed much. Again, not all their fault because neither has taken a snap in college. I would think Rhodes would get the No. 2 slot. Actually, Jamell Kennedy didn't look too back --- but that was with the third team. Willis was great. Defense was OK. But they're running half speed and with Muse not in there, not really much to evaluate. Emmanuel Sanders landed on his right shoulder after catching a deep pass. He had a wrap on it. I asked him after the scrimmage if he was OK, and he said yes and moved his shoulder. Probably the wrap was precautionary. But the hit of the night was when Will Bonilla rocked Aldrick Robinson, but I like Robinson. Fast. Thomas Morstead was great. DeMyron Martin does look leaner and his last run was impressive as he got to the corner. Brian McCann was pretty good with a nice pick on a deep Logan Turner pass. Keep in mind a lot of this stuff was vanilla. My take is our defense will do well if it can limit people to 17-20 points per game. And that isn't saying much. De'Von Bailey looks like a beast in uniform. Didn't do anything memorable. But he moves well and there's no reason to think why he won't see the field a lot. Our offense has some playmakers. Our kicking game could make a great impact all season. BTW, I would guess we had about 700 people out there. Not bad. And the parking wasn't bad either. That's all I got.
I was wondering what kind of gamesmanship would be going on with that at this thing. BTW, walked over to Moody before the scrimmage where the freshman were being welcomed. The placed was packed with the band and cheerleaders showing them them cheers and playing the songs. It took me back to my freshman year...before rocks were new. Or if you're a guy like mrydel, rocks had not even made an appearance on the planet. ![]()
I looked in on practice a week ago or so, and both guys wore No. 7. Weird. Obviously that rule about two guys wearing the same number on offense or defense or special teams doesn't apply to practice. Remember: WR 7 = Kennedy / QB 7 - Wilkerson.
"What kind of weirdo school are they running over there in Fort Worth?"
