Norman Will Reunite With Malzahn At Tulsa
By Alex Abrams
FAYETTEVILLE -- Wide receiver Andrew Norman has already played for Gus Malzahn at Springdale High and the University of Arkansas, and they'll be reuniting again.
Norman said Friday night that he has decided to transfer to the University of Tulsa after nearly enrolling at the University of Kansas earlier this week.
"I was up in Kansas, and it just didn't feel right the whole time," Norman told The Morning News of Northwest Arkansas. "Coach (Mark Mangino) and the staff was really great and everything; I couldn't have asked more of them.
"But it just felt like I was supposed to be here at Tulsa, and I feel comfortable with it."
Malzahn is in his first-year as co-offensive coordinator at Tulsa. As Springdale High's coach, he led Norman to a state championship in 2005 and they both went to Arkansas last year.
Norman was a freshman wide receiver, and Malzahn was the Razorbacks' offensive coordinator and receivers coach in 2006.
"I know how he (Malzahn) works and what he expects," Norman said. "He's really going to push me and make me better each day."
Norman had been looking for a school to transfer to since he asked Arkansas coach Houston Nutt for a release from his scholarship on Aug. 1.
Norman headed to Kansas this week, and he said he was close to enrolling in classes there when he started having reservations. He had a change of heart and decided Wednesday that Tulsa suited him better.
Norman said he will enroll in classes at Tulsa on Monday.
"I really can't tell you what it was that made me change (my mind) in the end, but it just seemed right," Norman said. "It seemed like the right thing to do."
Norman, a redshirt freshman, will have to sit out a year because he's transferring from Arkansas to another Division I-A school in Tulsa.
