I'm not complaining about the Mustang Club, I'm just not interested. Went down that path once before.
If you have been burned in the past, that's understandable to a point. You are not alone. There were plenty of supporters that were spit on by the Copeland Dream Team. My angst comes from ponyfans who choose not to see that we have a new and vastly improved Athetic Department. They have finally showed something worth supporting. I think they deserve to see how we feel about them. We have never seen this type of movement and hopefully success from any football or basketball team since the DP. I think the money, facilities, and coaching hires speak for themselves.
I am happy with the money, facilities and coaching hires. I'm not sure what the Mustang Club had to do with any of them, but after twenty years I think I'd rather just see some on-field and on-court success. I know that optomism abounds on this board but that won't pay the bills.
Unfortunately, a lot of people were spat upon in the Copeland years. I count myself among those. I will never forget the season ticket renewal "letter" that we received in the mail after the 2000 season. (Yes, I hold a grudge that long). What made it worse were the excuses made for Copeland and everybody else, including those made by people on this board. It went so far as people seriously suggested hiring from within when Copeland was fired/retired.
The only difference here is we have an AD who has done some things: new ad campaign, increased revenue, sold tickets, hired Doherty. Keep in mind, however, that some of those things (and some of those things that weren't done) have upset people: quadrupled the cost of Boulevard spots; eliminated free tailgating; some are not thrilled with the advertising campaign to date. I am reluctantly doing more this year than I have in years past: More tickets and a bigger donation. However, I don't begrudge those on the fence. But I do think they need to ask themselves what more could Orsini have done last year to make them do more and what does Orsini have to do this year? I am satisfied if those people set realistic goals.
The Mustang Club in the financial heart of the Athletic Department. No money for them, no money for the facilities and coach we brought in. Even though direct Mustang Club dollors were not used to build the practice facility and to pay Coach D, the university can only go so far into debt. If they see financial support and new donors, the university and the Athletic department have a justifiable financial leg to stand on (in terms investing more into the program). Would you pour money into a business that is stagnant and is showing no signs of progress? Progress on the field and court is hopefully only a matter of time, now we need to show the high ups that mustang nation is on board.
As I said, put results on the field. I'd say this is a realistic and reasonable goal--if he can string together two consecutive years with both winning seasons in football and post season men's basketball appearances. If that happened, I'd join the mustang club.
Touche! SMU shouldn't be. The Mustang Club should be able to support itself with donations and major sport revenue. SMU should support large opportunities not daily operation. This is the bed they have made for now.
I'm by no means satisfied with the state of the football program and how long it has taken to get to this point but at the same time if you can't admit that this program is in a much better place than we were when PB arrived you're not paying attention. Yes, we sometimes still call bad plays, poorly execute other plays, etc., but we are certainly headed in the right direction. We have players that are receiving recognition and the revival of our program is being talked about more and more. Again, I'm not satisfied but I, like many others, see the progress and appreciate that we are at least headed in the right direction. So, if you want to stand on the sidelines and stubbornly say you won't participate until we meet your standards (while not helping us get there), suit yourself. Why bother posting here and showing up to games? You're really just wasting your time since we obviously aren't worthy of your time. Nice attitidue!
Who is the "we" and "us" to whom you are referring? I have no quarrel with any of the posters here beyond the normal disagreements among fans, and considering the time I've spent here and at the old MM site, I guess I have decided that SMU is indeed worth my time and attention. If by "we" and "us" you refer to you and your fellow Mustang Clubbers, what would you want a bad attitude like mine in your club for anyway?
