Just Saw Coach Royal

Postby SMUstang » Thu Aug 23, 2007 7:30 pm

He is looking pretty old and feeble, but I guess I am too.

I just saw Darrell Royal

Postby MiMiguys » Thu Aug 23, 2007 9:40 pm

Oh, His just a guy that could come up with some great guotes like' Three things can happen when you throw the football, and two of them are bad."===Darrell Royal / University of Texas. "also "We live one day at a time and scratch where it itches."Darrell Royal/Texas after lost game "They cut us up like boarding house pie. And that's real small pieces."== He and Bear Bryant were just giants.
While I am at it, here is another favorite of mine.
"I asked Darrell Royal, the coach of the Texas Longhorns, why he didn't recruit me and he said "Well, Walt, we took a look at you and you weren't any good." ===== Walt Garrison/ Oklahoma State ==of course we all know where Walt ended up.

Another Royalism: "They cut us up thinner than boarding house pie."

Darrell Royal is a class act all the way, God bless him.

Bit of History : Coach Royal I believe actually applied for an SMU head coaching job in the 1950's but SMU picked someone else instead who was fired after only a few years.(Coach Bill Meek) I think Coach Royal was head coach at the University of Washington at that time.

Coach Royal was a perfect fit at Texas but I often wondered how he felt going against his alma mater Oklahoma every year in the Red River Shootout.

Add Frank Broyles to that list, as well.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Another Royal quote - when asked which QB he would start in the Cotton Bowl - "You gotta dance with who brung ya."
"It'd be nice to see Jesse Henderson break one here."

Before you give Royal sainthood, you might want to find a copy of Meat on the Hoof a pretty unkind view of the Royal treatment of his less than star players. He would actively try to get players to quit, by making them do drills which got them hurt, by moving them from athletic dorms to dumps, and many other creative methods later adopted at SMU by Dave Smith.

My only up close encounter was playing golf with him in a Austin, TX charity tourney. He kept running off the course to an RV that had Willie Nelson and cocaine in it. He did not spend a lot of time talking to Willie. Also in the group though was Hank Cochran, one of the most prolific song writers ever, and the entertainment was fabulous.

How many winless seasons did Royal ever have at UT? How many losing record seasons did he have while coaching the Longhorns? It would be interesting to see who "forgot more football" - Royal or Bennett!

No one's calling the man a saint. That was back in the era when you could do what it took to win.

One of the best things Mack has ever done at Texas (besides recruiting VY) was bringing Royal back into the fold.

DKR and Mack have one thing in common. They can both recruit the best athletes in the state of Texas, hands down. Everybody else gets the leftovers.
