we're hosting two tournaments and paul quinn college is in both of them. the non-conference slate has to be one of the worst in the country. i know we do it for the new guys to adjust, but our record last year indicates it really didnt help us
i guess that shows how much we have to go before we're a contender again.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
You know as well as anybody else that when you bring 7 freshmen -- including the great Mike Walker -- that you need to build your chemistry. It makes no sense to do it against Iowa State, Baylor, Arizona St. or So. Illinois. But since you know everything, let's make sure Matt checks in with you on how to put together the 2008-09 schedule. Stupidity at its best with the aforementioned comment.
I don't think thats the worst-case scenario with such a young team, I think it's better they learn against the paddy-cakes than throwing them to the wolves right away. Dallas Mavericks - 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS!
Long live the Circle of Champions!
I would agree with you normally, but honestly in your opinion, is it better to get our brains beat out by Big 12 schools with such a young team? Dallas Mavericks - 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS!
Long live the Circle of Champions!
Fight for Relevance-nobody gives a damn about any of those schools. If some you insist on making SMU irrelevant there will be a price to pay for buying victories.
100% correct. My apology to all the aplogists out there, but if you want to be a D1 team, then at some point you have to put on your Big Boy pants, man up, and play an actual D1 schedule. I understand the argument that Mavsrage and others are making here, but I also know it's not necessary to load your schedule with Big-12 teams. Play Louisiana Tech, play North Texas or New Mexico State., play Creighton or St. Louis. Dont play Paul Quinn, Houston Baptist, USC Upstate (?) and Prairie View A&M in one month, not if you want to make any claim to relevancy in the D-1 landscape. Paul Quinn comes to our gym 3 times (5 games in total) in 2 months, WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ABOUT? Are we an NAIA school now? Paul Quinn will spend more time in Moody than any of our conference mates........................... is this seriously happening? Maybe SMU is planning a secret move to the SWAC, so we're setting up an early rivalry with that conferences bottom feeders, Prairie View, Southern and Alabama State. UT-San Antonio and Texas State finished last place in the Southland. Even TCU and Colorado were in the cellar of their respective conferences last year. I'm going to have to go to Dayton to see SMU play a respectable team, they're the only team on our OOC schedule that had a winning record last year. Frankly, I'm in a bit of shock here, last year the schedule was too soft, but this one screams out that SMU is non-competitive, and doesn't intend to even try to be. Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.
What you guys are forgetting is that if the freshmen get as much pt as they should this season, these games will be competitive and we'll probably lose a fair share of them. This is all about getting some seasoning on some young guys without instilling a loser mentality right off the bat. I do not like playing a weak schedule as a matter of policy, but I understand the benefits in this instance. We are in no danger of having any d-1 relevancy this year no matter what.
That relevance argument is crap until 08-09. Guess ROAD GAMES AT Dayton and Colorado are not good enough. Should this group have a better conference record and mix in an upset or two, then the attention will come.
If the schedule for 08-09 is similar, then we have something to talk about. Until then, we have nothing to talk about. In Doherty we trust.
