Observations

Postby Mickey » Mon Sep 03, 2007 7:13 pm

Mine:
1. Why does Willis not take more snaps under center and let Martin run between the tackles? Handing off to him out of the shotgun and running wide is not getting it done. The OLine is supposed to have been Viloriaized and should be able to knocck some people off the l;ine.
2. Should have had a fumble recovery but Leonard was busy celebrating and McCray can't control the football. No discipline.
3. Sledge dropped 3, Givens 1, Dorsey 1,and Sanders 1.
4. Subsitution problems and defensive alignment problems.
Poor tackling and poor rotation by D.
5. What in the hell are Henderson and Mapps doing on the kickoff returns. Who is coaching the Special Teams?
6. Why did we bother playing Muse? Rest him!!
7. Darrius Bell should be redshirted. Looks lost and can't shed blocks.
8. Burned the redshirts of Leonard, Yanga, Smart, Bell, and Robinson. I didn't see Bailey or Fleming gat on the game.
9. Davey O'Brien Award- You have to be kidding!
10. Lot of shots of Willis smiling while we are getting our arses kicked!
11. Not even close to a sell out.

ESPN observations:
1. DBacks got no help from LB on the slants and gave them the inside routes.
2. SMU was shouting ALL OUT when they would blitz everyone. Real tough to figure out.
3. Terrible communication between Henderson and Mapps on kickoffs.
4. Wills doesn't carry ou fakes on running plays. He hands off and then stands there and watches the RB get destroyed. He needs to carry out fakes to keep the LBs honest..

That has been my rant for several years now... Bennett doesn't think we need a special teams coach. All the coaches together share in that responsibility. Of course, since Rusty Burns couldn't have spent more than 22 minutes devising this game plan, he should have had sufficient time to work on that...

You touched on my biggest pet peave. Martin is a big fast back, but needs a head of steam. Figure out a couple of plays from the I formation and let him pick his spot. Giving it to him flat footed and watching someone with his talent shuffle instead of bowl people over is painful. This is the single biggest mistake we are making on offense and there are plenty to choose from.

Can anyone who knows why they do this shed some light on it? - I just dont get it.

Biggest observation.......this is a typical post-DP SMU football team.........not one aspect of the game looked improved from the 6-6 team last year that got destroyed by Tech.

Punts were better

Receivers, LB's, D line, and QB play were worse.

- DT play was good, better than expected.
- Bonilla had a really bad game.
- Struggled at safety and LB to close down the slant.
- A team like Tech is difficult for us to beat because we dont have the size at corner to get in and disrupt the timing of the passing game or the slant pattern.
- No nickel package, so we aren't as confident in our team speed as some would lead you to believe.
- Safeties really struggled out there.
- Good energy from the DEs. Not much results against a big oline, but the DEs showed a lot of good energy. The d-line will be okay in conference.

- Big thing is on offense. Tech didn't make many mistakes. Both offenses rely on that - no mistakes, consistant production, the occasional big play. Our dropped passes in the first half and penalties in the second kill our chance to be effective. On top of that, nobody made a play. For Tech, when they had 3rd and long, someone made a play. We don't have receivers who can go up and get a ball. No Pellerin, no B Chase. That is going to hurt us this year unless we can get Robinson involved.

Score makes it worse than it was. Fact is that we had chances to stay in this game, but we kept ourselves from doing it. It is't the coaches fault when we drop open passes or make stupid penalties.

1. Why doesn't Jessie Henderson return all punts and kick offs?

2. Why is Zimmerman out there instead of the great freshman recruit from Waxahachie.

3. Is Phillip Burley hurt?

4. Why did we make Phillip Burley a tight end, when we need at least one good receiver with some size. ie Bobby Chase?

5. Finally, why did Bennett kick a field goal in the 4th quarter when we're trailing by at least 3 touchdowns? Those 3 points really helped!

Great questions. I had the same ones over the course of the game.

Great point on Burley, I forgot about him. He needs to be the tall receiver outside. Zimmerman and Sledge are freaking walkons.

Nothing wrong with Sledge, hell TCEH had a couple of Sledge-like receivers out there. But he is not going to outrun someone down the field, he is and always will be a "posession receiver" (aka, the slow white guy who catches everything around him)
- DT play was good
............................Defensive Tackle play was good ? Some talent was seen yes but basically NO PRESSUE at all on Tech QB and yet it was good ? I don't think so.

DT should hold their own on the line. The provided some push on the middle., but DE provided no pressure.

The right side of their line was the greatest mismatch of the entire game. I think their guard and tackle were both over 370. Our DE rushing that side looked to be about the size of their thighs. We knew that our D line was going to be a work in progress this year. I would think that this will be the best O line we will face all year. The important thing is that the team learns from this experience and can use it to their advantage when playing more similarly sized teams.
