The Chronicle's Joseph Duarte ranks Texas' 10 Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) programs, based on the last five years:
1. Texas: A national championship in 2005. Enough said.
2. TCU: Could follow Boise State as a BCS buster.
3. Texas Tech: Seven straight bowls and three wins over A&M in last four years.
• • •
4. Texas A&M: Another subpar season could result in third coach in six years.
5. Houston: Three bowls and C-USA title in four seasons under Art Briles.
6. UTEP: Two eight-win seasons but nothing else.
7. Rice: Coming off first bowl appearance in 45 years.
• • •
8. Baylor: Last winning season was 1995.
9. SMU: Has never recovered since the death penalty.
10. North Texas: Once dominant in Sun Belt, not-so-Mean Green are 5-19 in last two-plus seasons.
