I could have sworn that I responded to this post. We should play at least one stretch ourselves game (Big XII team - good); Two winnable games and TCU every year for OOC. Otherwise, we won't know how good or bad we are unless we have one game to judge our team. Sure playing a tough game right out of the chute might not be the best idea, but that's the date that's available to play these teams. Personally, I like playing former SWC opponents. There's history there and some memories for us old geezers.
We've got to play top competition. It makes our players better (theoretically) and ought to help recruiting (theoretically) (I'd rather play against TTU than Our Sisters of Mercy). I hate the a__ whippings and the opposing fans being louder and more organized than ours, but we must have well-regarded teams on the schedule.
As I have said before, I don't have a problem with the teams we play in nonconference this year (or last year). I have had problems with it in years past. My issue this year was with the order. I don't like spending a small fortune on marketing and then flushing it down the drain.
I whole heartedly endorse this suggestion. Class of '91
Since you obviously have not been paying attention, his position seems to be that the who is irrelevant at this stage since the model has not been fixed to his liking.
No, no, no. Stallion has been ripping Bennett's recruiting. I believe in the recent past he has said he thought SMU was mostly there as far as model goes. So, he clearly believes Bennett is part of the problem.
Oh, I've been paying attention. Perhaps more than I should, though. Anyhow, here's what Stallion said: In my response (where I said I agree 100% with everything he said in his original post), I asked a very serious question as to who he thought SMU should approach. I still would like to know who Stallion would recommend.
Bennett is part of the problem to the extent he is now associated with a losing tradition, although probably not completely of his own doing as pointed out ad nauseum in the "model" argument, which was reiterated by its oringinator earlier in thsi thread. Even if he was given carte blanche on recruiting from this day forward, he would have to overcome that stigma. The only way to begin to get rid of it is to win this year. So far that does not look very promising.
Please, please, please, PLEASE, PLEASE do not take this out of context, but our message board sounds very familiar to the Arkansas board last year after the blow out by USC. All they did was win 10 in a row after that and get into the SEC Championship game. And I would bet that had they played USC in the Bowl game they would have been blown out almost as badly as they were in the opener. We have never been ready to play Tech and they play to our weaknesses, but other than TCU, our schedule is easier from here on out. Will we bounce back and improve quickly and decisively, I do not know, but I can not see slitting wrists over this one loss. I would imagine that if any of us were a better coach than Bennett, we would be in the profession. That does not mean he is great. That does not mean he has not screwed up some things, it just means that he is a professional and good or bad, he is ours right now. I wonder what the messages would be if we had run the ball a lot, and had enough success to run down the clock and lose 28-9 instead of 49-9. Everyone would be screaming that we should have passed more and opened it up. We were dead on offense, and overmatched on both sides of the ball. That will not be the case the balance of the year in most cases. I personally think we have a good chance of getting back to .500 for the season this week. And that should pleasantly surprise us both.
