The Squires are worthless. All they do is wear ties and get trashed.

They're an f'ing embarassment to the school. They need to be disbanded, and anyway this incarnation of it is a glorifed frat.

The TT guy is right.

From what I hear it was a spirit group back in the 30s or 40s. It was revived when the new stadium was built. This incarnation of it is comprised of members from the SMU's various fraternities.

I could be wrong.

This board I serve on had a lunch meeting today and about 12 people were there, none of who attended SMU and only one who attended the game monday. When we all started talking about our various colleges and how they did over the weekend, of course one guy brought up the "dancing queen" video and almost everyone there had seen it. So yeah, pretty freaking embarassing.

Now, not to be a hypocrite here, since i have done many silly things while under the influence. But 1) I'm usually not on the sidelines in front of 20,000 people doing it and 2) I dont allow myself to be video taped.

You are right. Squires was originally a spirit group that started just after WWII and lasted in some capacity into the 70s and maybe even 80s. Back in the day they were a very highly respected group, kind of like UT's Silver Spurs. When Ford Stadium was built the sports marketing department was trying to revive any old traditions they could, and Squires ended up being one of them.

The whole idea was to try and get some 'influential' members of the student body actively involved, or at the very least attending football games, in hopes that they might set an example as Mustang fans and encourage others students to come out to games. Argue if you must, but most of the influential students on campus are indeed greek, so it wasn't a terrible place to start. It wasn't just random frat guys either, the sports marketing department played a big part in who was in the initial group back in 2000, and they were all good, responsible guys. It was left up to them recruit new members, etc. When I was there we still put alot of weight on character and general conduct when considering new members. Obviously something has changed.

While the main purpose of the group was/is to try to get students (even if it is just greeks, that is a huge proportion of the student body) involved and coming to football games we had a few other purposes. We had a huge old ships bell attached to a cart that we would ring whenever the Ponies scored, and a flag to run around the field. We had four field passes for the bell ringers/flag runners, and group was situated in the South endzone. Whoever wasn't on the field was on the grassy knoll. We also had a red panel van with a big blue 'S' painted on the side and the roof and windows cut out. We would drive around the BLVD about 30 min before gametime w/ bullhorns trying to fire people up and get them to go to the game.

For the first few years I am not sure if we were really achieving our goal on the scale intended, but at least we were not an embarrasment. I am not saying we went to games stone cold sober or were angels (don't lie and say any of you are either), but we were respectful and very aware that all eyes were on us.

Something has obviously gone horribly wrong. For one, I didn't see a van, bell or flag. What was thier actual purpose on the field. All I saw were what looked like a bunch of drunken queers dancing around like kansas city faggots. They looked sloppy, with no jackets, untucked shirts and flip-flops with a tie. They represented all of the bad SMU stereotypes to a 'T', and somehow went a step further by appearing completely homosexual. As I said earlier in this post, a group of alums is trying to ensure that this doesn't happen again, even if it means keeping this group off the field and out of sight until they somehow prove they can handle the responsibility.

I want to apoligize to all of the other Pony fans for that display on Monday, it was an embarrasment to the school.

I have to ask this...and I can't be the only one wondering:

Is the alternative lifestyle community in Kansas City more flamboyant than other communities? I just hadn't heard that term before and was dying to know. Great post, by the way.

It's from the movie Blazing Saddles, at one point they make reference to people 'dancing around like a bunch of Kansas City faggots.' I guess that movie wasn't as popular as I thought!

that wasn't the squires...the squires got pulled after last year since they weren't showing up early enough to get set up and some other problems with them...can't remember exactly what they were. the guys from the video were some lambda chi's who usually help blow up the helmet before the game.

wait a second, the guys dancing around like a bunch of ferries are chops? then on top of that the reason they are on the field is to help blow (up) the helmet?

wow, this video really does hit the stereotypes dead on!

Thanks for the info, no wonder I haven't been able to get in touch with thier current president!

It sucks that the Squiers got pulled for whatever reason, but thank god that wasn't them dancing around on the video. It seems about right that those were Lamb Chops.

Squiers or Lambda Chi..it doesn't matter. I've seen the Squiers behave in a similar way at games during my time at SMU. But the Lambda Chi thing makes sense as well.
