Please, please, please, PLEASE, PLEASE do not take this out of context, but our message board sounds very familiar to the Arkansas board last year after the blow out by USC. All they did was win 10 in a row after that and get into the SEC Championship game. And I would bet that had they played USC in the Bowl game they would have been blown out almost as badly as they were in the opener.

We have never been ready to play Tech and they play to our weaknesses, but other than TCU, our schedule is easier from here on out.

Will we bounce back and improve quickly and decisively, I do not know, but I can not see slitting wrists over this one loss. I would imagine that if any of us were a better coach than Bennett, we would be in the profession. That does not mean he is great. That does not mean he has not screwed up some things, it just means that he is a professional and good or bad, he is ours right now. I wonder what the messages would be if we had run the ball a lot, and had enough success to run down the clock and lose 28-9 instead of 49-9. Everyone would be screaming that we should have passed more and opened it up. We were dead on offense, and overmatched on both sides of the ball. That will not be the case the balance of the year in most cases. I personally think we have a good chance of getting back to .500 for the season this week. And that should pleasantly surprise us both.

My position is that Bennett gets a full 6 years to get over the hump. Never have said he should be fired. I'm fully willing to see if he can do it. Its admitedly a tough job. Not near as tough as Gregg, Rossley and Cavan had so he should be judged by a much tougher standard-there should be much higher expectations. Yes I'd guesstimate 85% of the changes that need to be made since the DP have been made. The effect in an admitedly unscientific manner is that in any 85 man roster we lose about 15% of the players we need so say about 12 players we don't get in school or that leave because a policy SMU has. So 2-3 players a year over a 5 year window that SMU handicaps itself from getting. It makes a difference. Yes it is fair to judge a Head Coach's recruiting ability after 6 years-I don't think Phil Bennett's recruiting has been very good and definitely not up to high standards if the goal is Championships, Bowls, beating TCU and even according to our AD Top 25 standards. Bennett claims he has found A+ nuggets in recruiting over his 6 years. He gets a chance to prove it-so far I'd say they have proven to be quite mediocre to average. Let the chips fall where they may.
