Young Alum Football Kickoff

Postby couch 'em » Thu Sep 06, 2007 9:08 pm

I went to the Young Alum Football Kickoff in the stadium club today. Got a free 'pony up' tshirt and SMU koozie. Bennett talked for about 5 sentences then took off for the elevator with a look of fear in his eye. I wouldn't want to stick around and risk getting grilled either.

Nice event with free cheese and beer, but it was more of a season ticket sales pitch than anything.

Well, first we were talked to by some lady from marketing. She talked about the 'pony up' campaign, saying that it was meant to be slightly unclear at first viewing to create interest and a 'buzz'. That she thinks it has thus far been successful due to the number of students in 'pony up' shirts and the general buzz around town. She talked about how the boulevard is there to prepare people for the game, and that everyone should go to the game and not just sit on the boulevard. Also, you apparently get half-price season tickets if you graduated in the last 5 years. This is good to know, since I graduated 2 years ago and this is the first I've heard of it.

Bennett pretty much just said that he was glad everyone came out, and not to judge the team by the first game. That a season is a marathon not a sprint, and that we'll see a much improved team against UNT. He commented that he didn't mind that there were more Tech fans than SMU fans, because the team 'just wants fans'. Also, we need to help by creating a home field advantage by getting as many people to the game as possible.

The he high-tailed it out of there. He looked like he was expecting a hostile crowd, and rightly so.

There were probably about 50 people there. The guac dip was good. The jumbotron/tvs were showing ponies highlights. (from last season, of course) It would have been nice to get a longer presentation from Bennett or anyone who wasn't there with a sales pitch.

Also, there was a really, really ancient coach of something there, but I didn't get to ask who it was. He was helped in. Anyone know who this was?

Did you have to get a golden ticket to be invited to this? I'm a new alum, and I had no idea about this, and I also knew nothing about the discount season tickets.

The price increase was the main reason why we decided not to renew our season tix. We will just be buying a individual game tickets as the games come along.

I got the invitation severly late for this event. Would have gone but by the time I got the invite (tuesday) there was no way I could swing it. Was it well attended?

LawSchool if you are within 5 years from grad you get 1/2 price season tickets...best deal in the metroplex if you ask me!

I think I signed up for the young alumni email group when I attended the Tulane game watching party down on lower Greenville last year, and they occasionally send out emails. I think the previous event they emailed about was some kind of wine and cheese tasting.

The emails come from Andrew Snow [email protected] but list [email protected] in the email, so I guess you could email either one to get on it.
