Stallion model?

Postby Alaric » Fri Sep 07, 2007 9:07 am

Would Stallion's model look something like this?

-Drop academic standards for athletes to the D1 minimum;
-Create football friendly majors/curriculum;
-Create friendly environment for D1 & JUCO transfers;
-As a sidenote, get a serious coach but that's really not a part of changing the model.

Why should we really care if our football & basketball teams have higher academic qualifications than any other team? I used to agree with higher standards but have changed my mind. If professors don't want dumb jokes, then just have football friendly curriculum and they never have to teach them.

What's the general sentiment out there and could the alumni base put enough pressure on SMU to change the model?

I assume TCU would be the model we would like to emulate... and probably be the most feasible.

I don't know what they're doing... but it seems to be working.

I have never been a big advocate of "athlete-friendly majors." My only endorsement of such majors was as a vehicle for allowing credits to transfer from other institutions. I don't personally believe such majors really aid recruitment. As for keeping players in school, there are plenty of majors at SMU for an athlete to take. Finally, I always find it amusing that people think these majors can be created out of thin air.

To me the academic model is more results oriented. Graduation for athletes should mirror that of the institution as a whole. Currently, the football and basketball graduation rates exceed that of the University as a whole.

I have always felt that athletes should be allowed to major in Football. Meadows has no problem letting kids major in Theatre. Equally useful majors, IMO.

I'd like to see a graduate thesis on the derivation of the "hut" in football.

Maybe we could dig up Henry Ford as a coach. He would also tie in with our stadium. We could have the Model T, run the winged T, get good enough to beat UT and get an exclusive contract to be on TV.
