Flooding on The Hilltop

Postby MrMustang1965 » Mon Sep 10, 2007 10:05 am

Have just returned from taking my wife to a meeting at Highland Park United Methodist Church on the southwest corner of the campus. University police have blocked off Bishop Ave. from the Meadows Garage north to Binkley on both sides of The Boulevard. Also, Airline Drive from Moody Coliseum north to University Boulevard is under about 2 1/2 ft. of water. Storm sewers are unable to handle the amount of rainfall and runoff. Students are wading thru knee-deep water to get to classes. It's worst around the Physical Plant and the University Police HQ. If you're driving thru campus this morning, please be careful! Several cars have already stalled out from trying to drive thru water that was too high to maneuver.

I first drove down Binkley (westbound) after detouring thru the campus to get to Bishop Blvd. I did not notice anything out of the ordinary at the Band Hall. However, University Police were not allowing motorists to travel southbound on Bishop from Binkley and were making them turnaround and go back eastbound on Binkley.

The band hall is below ground level, and there have been flooding problems during heavy rains in the past.

Then I suspect there will be problems today because it's pouring here!

Just got an email from a campus spokesperson who says that Bishop Blvd. has been re-opened and that all buildings on campus are 'open'.

That's usually when somebody leaves the water hose running when they're filling up the pool.

I walked from my truck (in Moody) at 9:30am across Airline to Junkins. It was not flooded. It poured like hell though. And the campus is under-drained.

From high on the Hilltop in Big D. I guess they just assume that water will run downhill. Too bad the Hilltop is a plateau.

Yeah, that was a nasty rain. Although what happened in September was not nearly as bad as what happened during the summer this year. Campus became a lake instead of just a bunch of streams. Talk about a mess then.

Probably, but even those who worked there during the summer got that too. But I am enrolled and worked over the summer.

No. I just sent an email to the campus media relations/PR department and they replied.

Ummmm....what prompted this thread to spring up all of a sudden?

Ahh, 1764, the year Chief Pontiac surrendered to the British.
