Two interesting conversations

Postby SMU Football Blog » Sun Sep 16, 2007 8:13 pm

Was at a friend's house for Cowboys' game. Had two interesting conversations. The first was with a TCU grad. He was down. He said he thought the game on Saturday was going to be a war. I said he was a nut; that TCU was going to crush SMU.

The next conversation was with a Rice grad. I won't say why, but this guy is in a unique position to know a lot about college sports. He said Rice was not going to win a game this year. I asked him what happened with Nichols State. He said Rice was awful. I asked if they hired the wrong guy. He said absolutely, they hired the wrong guy, but they did not have a choice-noone was going to take that job. And then, unsolicied, he added, "As SMU is going to find out very shortly."

You would be surprised how many people actually want this job.

I don't disagree. There aren't that many IA jobs out there and only so many come open each year. There will be options. If this board had a better search feature, you could go back and see where I have said that many times.

However, this guy's comment gave me pause. Because, while I can't get into why, he would know better than a lot of us. But then, hey, he was overlooking the fact they hired a guy that took them to a bowl last year.

George O'Leary and Mike Price are coaching in C-USA but UCF has the sixth largest student body and a new stadium. Price has strong support at UTEP, but it's in El Paso. Rice is handcuffed by stringent academic requirements and a lack of support. It was embarrassing to see so few people at the RU/TT game. The cameras had to stay focused on the field because there wasn't anyone in the stands. Certainly, pot kettle black coming from a UH/SMU fan but it's true. However, if you're looking for a stepping stone out of the Championship Division, Rice is a fine place to start. They could have hired Applewhite, correct? He's done OK at Alabama so far. You certainly have to take more risks and probably need a rather unconventional offense.

Are there any SMU grads that are doing a fine job as a lower division HC or BCS assistant?
Who has a rather unconventional offense?

Hmm. Off the top of my head, my top choice would be Glen Mason. He did very well at KU and very respectably at Minnesota. I don't know if he has any Texas connections but I've always liked him.

My prediction - our new coach is identified and is in the State of Texas.

They said that about SMU bball as well, but Orsini talked Doherty into taking on the challenge and I don't see Doherty saying "it just can't be done here".

The real question is whether SMU will be able to retain the coaches who finally get this athletic program (referring to football and men's bball) turned around. We start fielding post season programs and it will really be time to "Pony up"
