The only way a coordinator would work

Postby RGV Pony » Mon Sep 17, 2007 10:00 am

...would be if it's a current coordinator in the NFL, NOT a college coordinator. I recall when LSU had to replace Saban, they would only consider someone with NFL experience. Of course, we're not LSU.

Gibbs whom Stallion mentioned fits that mold. Another who does would be Rex Ryan. He's certainly paid his dues, and has coached at virtually every level...D II, I-AA, BCS, NFL.

the problem with Pro Coordinators are that you have to wait until their NFL Season ends to get them If he's the guy you really want-probably worth it.

I can't remember, is there some SMU rule about how long before you can interview or something like that?

And if we do have to wait for a Pro Coordinator, do we kiss the recruiting season goodbye, or does it even matter with such a lower tier school?

Exactly, recruiting season is virtually over by the time you interview & name an nfl coach as your HC.

If you're willing to write-off 08 & 09 then take the chance.

Were we writing off 02-07 with our last hire?

I say if Bennett gets canned, keep your options open.

as far as I know SMU has always waited the suggested period according to I believe federal fair employment guidelines that suggest 30 days-I'm a little fuzzy on this-perhaps someone knows better. I just know SMU waits 30 days. That creates a real problem because if you fire someone on say November 25 then you can't hire anyone until after Christmas. But that's the dead period that continues until January 6th or so. The signing date is around the first Tuesday in February but almost all scholarships are called for about 7 days before that. So essentially a new coach has less than 3 weeks of real recruiting left. Other schools aren't concerned with this issue. If you can get somone hired by the first weekend in December you don't lose any recruiting weekends.
