New Coach? Be careful what you wish for....

Postby Billy Joe » Mon Sep 17, 2007 5:40 pm

A new coach does not necessarily mean the team will be better. It will take at leas $1M to get a big name coach in here and I seriously doubt SMU will pay that much (We haven't in the past). Bennett has been here 6 years without a winning record and without a bowl game. He has stayed in part because the school will not pay the money to get a big name coach. I am sure Orsini's decision to keep Bennett was based on the lack of money available to hire a big name. The lack of attendance from SMU fans in the two home games shows his decision to keep Bennett is not well received by the SMU fans.

It is nice, however, to see the expectations rise for this team from the fans who post on this board. Going forward, one of two things will happen 1) the team will continue to improve and salvage the season, or 2) the team will quit and finish with 2 more wins....over Tulane and Rice. Based on the teams lack of prepardness and inabilty to compete to date the latter is likely. Bennett is probably gone regardless. I hope we do not hire another unproven Div. 1-A head coach because we are too cheap to get a big name in here.

They spent more money to bring in a name basketball coach and it's time to spend some money on a REAL football coach. Football brings in more money than BBall.

Agree, but I would wager that our players would be more prepared, disciplined, and have a better game plan with a coach like Jimmy Johnson, etc.

When Mr. Ford stroked the check to the university for a new stadium he did it to RAISE the level of play/winning vs. business as usual and I would assume when he was writing down all those zeros he told Dr. Turner as much.

There is plenty of money out there (2,000 donations of $500 = $1,000,000).

The school has to decide that they want a top 25 program, and I believe they have finally turned the corner on their commitment. Orsini is the right guy and will make better decisions to make things happen. We need to provide our support by going to games and, for those who can, donating to the mustang club, etc.

A top coach can sell the football along with the intangibles outiside of football for a recruit to come to a university the caliber of smu in a city like dallas vs going to lubbock, fw, denton, waco, (you pick it).

Your point is pointless. Maybe aTm should be careful for what they wish for, but not us.

Really? Pointless? Coaching changes in the past have produced the same result...losing seasons! Does a coaching change need to be made? Yes. Should it be made mid-season when SMU is destined for a losing season? Yes. Will the change mean a winning season? Probably not unless a big name is hired and history says SMU will not spend the money to get a big name coach. So, my point is not pointless....you are.

ND gave Weis a 10 year contract. Now do the math in figuring out the cost to fire him. Ty Willingham cashed a check, went to Washington and is LHAO.

Yes a new coach who can put a quality team on the field, keep us competitive in games

My gripe is that we listened to this clown talk about upgrading our talent for 6 years-

we play in a watered down conference and we keep getting destroyed decimated humiliated and emabarrassed!

Does anyone see progress if anything he admits we are moving backwards!

Please resign and save our Instittution the $$$$, God know you have taken well more than you have earned!

are you in any way implying coach phil should be retained as head coach if we win less than 7 games?

Here is my surprise pick. He is currently at the University of Tennessee as a coordinator. He has ties to Ole Miss and to Notre Dame (the Turner/Orsini test). He has prior head coaching experience. His name is David Cutcliffe former head coach at Ole Miss. Since Turner is trying to remake everything into the image of Ole Miss, why not hire a former head coach.
