 Not that I think becoming a Div. 1 FCS (Football Championship Subdivision; Div. 1-AA no longer exists) member is the answer, it's an interesting proposition that you raise.

Ford Stadium would be the 'crown jewel' of the FCS and, in fact, could become the home of the FCS National Championship game. Imagine the publicity of a 'true' national championship game being played in Dallas and being broadcast nationally on ESPN2! ;) The FCS actually has a playoff system, unlike Div. 1 FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) which relies on the BCS to determine a 'national champion'. SMU could schedule OOC games against Appalachian State, North Dakota State and the University of Montana...all powerhouse Div. 1-FCS programs. And...SMU would also continue its scheduled games against TCU and UNT to keep Div. 1-FBS schools in the D-FW area coming to Ford.

SMU could become a new member of the Southland Conference and play Sam Houston State :), Stephen F. Austin State, Texas State - San Marcos, Central Arkansas (newest SLC member), McNeese State, Northwestern State, Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana.

Texas State - San Marcos has been beating the drum for a few years that they want to become a Div. 1 FBS team. If they were to leave the conference, that would make way for the Mustangs.

In your scenario, jt...you say that SMU would shift its focus to becoming a Div. 1-A basketball power...the Mustangs would also have to become a member of the Southland Conference for bball, too...playing the same schools listed above as well as the University of Texas - Arlington, the University of Texas - San Antonio and Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.

And the Southland Conference commissioner lives in the shadow of SMU and the conference headquarters is located in Frisco, TX...just a short drive up the Dallas North Tollroad.

Sounds like you may be on to something, jt!

And if any of you truly think that SMU will become a Div. 1 FCS team...

Sure does. With heavy hitters NC Central, Stony Brook, Presbyterian, and Savannah State.
