Question regarding our Coaching

Postby Dwan » Wed Sep 19, 2007 10:18 pm

Is there another college program who has had 3 QBs transfer and make it into the NFL in the last 10 years and not gone to a bowl game in that time span?

To me this speaks volumes about the kind of coaching we have had under Cavan and Bennett. Very poor at developing talent. When you do not recruit at a high level, it is so important to be a program that can identify talent that fits your system and then develop that talent. OR fit a system around the type of talent you can attract and develop it. Look at this current team and our offensive woes....how can you not find a way to get Martin or Chase more involved?

Hawaii is a program that does a great job of this. They never sniff a top 250 national player unless they are from Hawaii and even then, they rarely stay in Hawaii. Its a case of a good coach taking lemons and making lemonade. Oregon in the late 80s and early 90s under Rich Brooks was the same way.

do you think opposing coaches really have to develop an in-depth game plan against us? i honestly think preparing to play smu in football is a walk in the park for opposing coaches, i sometimes think we are the laughing stock of d-1a football because our play calling is so unimaginative

To me, multiple QB's transferring tells me more about the QBs (or perhaps the coaches ability to evaluate a QB's character) than it does the coaches ability to coach the game. But that's just me.

I say the same thing about Korea leaving the Japanese Empire. They foolishly did not bow to our will, as though we could possibly oppress them.

I believe that only one of those 3 actually made it into the NFL: Josh McCown from Sam Houston State. ;)

My point being that they had the talent level to make an NFL roster in some capacity.

I guess I feel that a big part of coaching is getting the most out of an individual. Three guys with enough talent to make it on a roster in the NFL are benched at a school that has not won more than 6 games in a season in 20 years, and all the while playing the weakest competition in Division 1A?

If it happened once you could say the kid was the wrong fit or an isolated event....but three times! And I know with McCown, people say how crappy he played at SMU....which is exactly my point. The guy did not transfer and all of a sudden become a great athlete.

One must remember that we threw these kids in as freshman. Often with little to no offensive line. They had horrible years and transferred. It wasn’t a matter of developing, as it was a matter of getting a body on the field in a certain position. This is not an uncommon result from using a kid that isn't ready to play. Please look at the Mitch Mustain situation at U of Arkansas. He was thrown into a situation before he was ready. He had a tremendous number of mistakes. The fans got very testy and he transferred to USC.

It wasn’t a matter of developing; it was a matter of putting a kid in a situation design to fail. When the kid failed, he moved on. We are now in a situation to develop a QB (see Willis). Willis was able to practice for a year. Develop both mentally and physically. And he will probably stay with us and not transfer.

Chris Sanders stuck with the Titans at least for awhile.

I saw McCown play against NC State. He threw three or four picks and was sacked half a dozen times. If you asked me on that day whether he would be a starting NFL QB, I'd have wet myself laughing. He didn't stay in the pocket, he didn't make good reads and to his defense, he was running for his life most of the evening. So, he left SMU after he was appropriately benched. Page came in made better reads while still running for his life and was sacked fewer times and thus was named starter thereafter and did a decent job at QB. McCown needed a fresh start somewhere else and took advantage of that fresh start.

And perhaps Lukar has played a few half time shows.
