it still stings, though!
And the frogs know it!!! "If you're not making enemies, you're not making money!" --GG
Despite the fact that the coaches, administrators, alumni, etc. involved deserved it, the guys that delivered the penalty as well as the hypocrites who sold SMU out while they themselves did the same thing ought to have been horse-whipped.
Deloss Dodds was a grade-A SOB who deserves whatever really rotten crap ought to come his way. The NCAA are still the biggest bunch of power-hungry ego-driven geek-wankers, withstanding only maybe the BCS. When I read about what went on the SWC before, and I watch UT, TAMU, TT, and Baylor playing in a solid conference now...NONE of those a$$holes deserves to be there. Cheating SOBs and their NCAA lackeys. I heard that Berst and Dodds were buddies anyway. Funny how that works. Disingenious b4st4rds. "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." I guess by analogy you think the same about SMU since they were cheating SOBs as well?
Please don't parse my rant (oh, I know it's fun...we are bored and frustrated, so what the hey...gives us something to do).
I just got frustrated on a Friday afternoon where the high school game is too far away to travel tonight, and I am fighting food coma from a heavy lunch. SMU got its fair share of consequences, don't you think? Dodds & Co. didn't...period. They got a new conference out of it, along with several bowls and arguably a national championship. That isn't poetic justice...that is the ultimate in J.R. screwing Bobby. "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." The Benediction, Doc Breeden, circa 1992
That's a really good point, particularly given PB's recent comments about players not getting what the coaches are coaching (or words to the effect).
What's causing the communication problems?
So you are saying that all the conversations I have ever had with alums of SMU, A&M, and even UT about the crazy 80s are false? I just put it together from newspaper articles that talk about the guy running the SWC and his finding all this cheating going on all over the place. I hear things...yes, they probably are embellished...but that much noise, and there is usually something behind it. I am actually speaking specifically about a conversation I had with an old A&M alum on speaking terms with Jackie Sherrill. He recounted Sherrill comments to him that Sherrill thought it pretty crappy that Dodds permitted the same kind of shenanigans going on at A&M, SMU, Tech, TCU, and yes, Baylor too, and had the nerve to suggest an investigation was in order on Sherrill to an old buddy of his from school (I believe it was Berst...maybe wrong on that one, though). Sherrill believed that Dodds pulled similar B.S. with SMU as well. This particular old alum said he wouldn't put it past Dodds, as though he was corrupt, he was extremely smart and had a vision for UT Athletics, that he foresaw the end of the SWC and better pastures in the PAC-10. But hey, I admit to not knowing anything for sure except that the Death Penalty was issued only once, and UT coaches, players, and athletic administrators tend to do whatever they feel like whenever they feel like with little or not oversight nor reins except those specifically applied to figuring out a way to win on the field. And they are aided and abetted by a press machine in DFW that does little to excoriate them for anything yet finds whatever silver thread that they can to play up to an audience that doesn't care whether UT cheats or not...making them as culpable as SMU's alumni community, the only difference being that there are more of them than SMU alumni. That's truth as I see it, Stallion...you can parse it however the hell you want. I don't care. I'm just as sick as you of seeing SMU falter, by its own devices and especially by others. And you can carry on saying "I told you so", but it doesn't do a damn for fixing it or my/our attitudes about it. So leave me alone and let me have my whine. "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." The Benediction, Doc Breeden, circa 1992
you can look at what just happened at OU to note how the big schools get treated by the NCAA. So funny you have to laugh. a mere slap on the wrist. You guys got screwed, and so did we a couple of years later. The good ole boy network is alive and well in the ncaa. THAT SAID, BEAT THE GLUE OUT OF SMU!! ( i'll pull for ya next week)
I recall seeing an interview with Dickerson right after SMU got the DP, he said when the NCAA questioned him about his relationship with SMU and he TOLD THE INVESTIGATORS ABOUT TEXAS, OKLA AND ARKANSAS AND WHAT THEY OFFERED the investigators response was "Why would those schools have to pay anyone?"!!!!!!
And you don't think the NCAA is biased?
Wouldn't expect anything different from the Star.
The fact that you do not recall does not surprise me Stallion. That is just a convenient way to get around the cold hard truth of selective enforcement. You've just stated the obvious. Congrats! You have now joined the enlightened. You are no longer on the dark side.
