It's clear this staff in incapable of winning when it counts

Postby George S. Patton » Sun Sep 23, 2007 12:47 am

Before I start,
I thought the TCU tailgate section in the north end zone was a great scene. Went to two of people I know, and the spreads were plenty. Satellite TVs setup for other games. Just a great environment.

And nice to see the turnout we brought to Amon Carter. A lot of students. And it was great to be around the co-eds!! God, I miss college.

To the game,
Everyone who watched in the stadium and on TV recognizes this was a game we could have won. Not should have, but could have.

For TCU, their offense blows. Running 3 QBs out there is grab-bag offense. Their d-line is good but Ortiz is better than Blake. Blake is a wuss. Their DBs are great. Great technique, and I thought our WRs earned everything they got.

This coaching staff completely let this team down. You have a 4th-and-1 at the 24 in the final minute of the first half, and you run James Mapps and not Demyron Martin. A source has told me he pulled himself out because he was dizzy.

DeMyron Martin rushes for 100+ yards tonight and did not have a carry in the third quarter. He caught a little swingout for 3 yards. Not one carry. We establish him in the first half, have some success and then go away from him. Regardless this of this dizzy business, he was on the field for most of the period. If the coaching staff was sending a message to him with no carries, then they have no idea when and when not to send a message.

You have two other possessions in the 4th quarter that get to the 20 and 9 and you come away with nothing because your staff isn't organized to manage these game situations. The timeout on 3rd and goal on the last gasp revealed coaches were unprepared to help their players and showed they don't know how to manage games. It's like they freeze.

Did our defense step up? I think it did but again part of that is because TCU's offense is horrible. Two fumbles inside our 12? Awful. That kept us in it.

Can't play a game without some kind of breakdown with the punt team. Remember, UNT last year?

And believe what you want. I believe our talent is as close to TCU as it has been in the last couple of years. It's not there between our OL and their DL, but our DL was fairly equal with their OL.

The keeper of the star said in an earlier thread that we are not executing the plays that are called. I agree. But I also believe that this coaching is not organized enough to get everybody running on the same page. Inexcusable.

I may add to this later...but that's all I have for now.

That said. Get ready for 3-9 because it's coming.

Phil said we had 7 red zone opportunities that resulted in ZERO points. Is that true? Seems a tad high but heck we kick FGs and left 21 points on the field? I do give TCU some credit. Excellent DEs, the LB made an very athletic play on the INT TD and their DBs took our WRs completely out of the game in the second half reducing us to sandlot football.

All I can recall is 4. And 1 out of 4 isn't good.

We turned it over on downs 3 times tonight - from the TCU 24, 20 and 19. The fumble and the interception were both from around midfield. Maybe he meant 7 for the season so far - that would require some research.

I was really hoping this would be the year that SMU did not have a punt blocked for a touchdown.....Oh well......there is always next year.

I believe Martin was knocked dizzy ON the fourth and one play.

That might be right. Still, that's when he was playing FULLBACK and leading for Mapps. He should have been carrying the football on that play. Use your best player for that situation. We didn't use our best player for that situation.

two of them if not 3 of them came late in the 4th so we had to try to get TD's not FG

Agree. I was very impressed with all 150 of the Pony fans who turned out for the game.

Seriously without question, TCU brought 8 times more fans to SMU last year. It was pathetic. Probably the worst attendance of SMU fans at a TCU game that I ever remember-with the possible exception of the post DP years

When they interviewed Bennett after halftime, he said that Martin had gotten his bell rung, and they didn't know if he would play in the second half. It looked like he tried to play on one series and never came back in. So, he probably felt woozy in that one effort.

I would say that our defensive line looked a bit better. We looked a little disorganized when the brought the running QB in, but in the second half clearly adjustments were made and he was less effective. The pass defense still lookly leaky. But for the fact that TCU receivers have hands with jello on them, our guys were getting beaten all night.
