You have to play a conference game to burn a redshirt, I think?

You burn a redshirt, as soon as you step on the field. Then you have the medical redshirt variables.

once you play, if not for injury, you just burned a year. you can redshirt next year, but you just lost this year.

wrong, you are allowed 12 to 16 quarters before your redshirt is burned.. every year true freshman are given the opportunity to show that they are ready to play at the D1 level and then they are allowed to redshirt.

tmustangp is right. You can play up to 20% of your teams "games" which equates to 3 games (12 quarters) of an 11 game season... BUT all your participation must be in the FIRST HALF of the season... (so games 1-5). The player does not participate in any games the rest of the year for some obscure/insignificant injury (hamstring/groin/strained back) which is different from a medical redshirt.

Back to the original intent of this thread. Anyone know where these players are or what's up?

we've discussed this over 20 times on this board. One play wastes the redshirt year. Medical redshirt year can only be obtained after medically verified proof of an actual injury and that's where the quarters/% factor comes in.

In the words of XTC who actually posted the NCAA rule on redshirts, if anyone can find the rule change that allows a player to play any at all and still be eligible for a redshirt (not medical hardship, but actual redshirt) please post it. It is getting ridiculous that some of you continually post this "they can play this many plays" stuff when you have nothing to back it up.
If you play one play, period, your red shirt is burned. One of the biggest mistakes is to refer to a medical hardship as a redshirt. It is done often by many but it is wrong terminology. It is a "hardship" not a "redshirt" if it is for medical reasons and that is when to 20% rule comes into effect.
Again, for all of those who are so sure that a player can play more than one play or more and still red shirt, please state the NCAA ruling that changed this because there are many of us that would like to see this rule.

Each student is allowed no more than four seasons of competition per sport. If you were not a qualifier, you may have fewer seasons of competition available to you. You should know that NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition.

According to the ncaa website (a bunch of .pdf files)
Red Shirt
Red shirting is not an official NCAA term, but the term is used when a student-athlete does not participate
in any competition during a particular academic year (i.e., neither in the championship nor the nonchampionship
segment of the playing season). A student-athlete may be red-shirted at any point in his/her
athletic career.

We haven't discussed UTEP which now has a new potential. SMU sounded on the webcast to have finally showed up for a game. The defense sounded like it played well and the offense (exclude two backbreaking mistakes) played more consistently. Now is UTEP (a home game) within reason?

Please explain to me why Patrick Fleming had his red shirt burned. I know that he is still eligible for a medical red shirt since he has not played enough to eliminate that red shirt but why did the coaches use him?
