Jean-Jacque Article

Postby Pony94 » Sun Sep 23, 2007 10:10 am

Jean-Jacque makes some interesting points in his article today:

1. Since 2002 only ONE C-USA team has NOT been to a bowl game
2. Houston was 0-11 in 2001, yet had 10 wins last year (they DEVELOPED a great quarterback, but our coaches can't make Willis better)
3. From 2001-2003, UTEP won a total of 6 games, with Price they have won 8 in each of his first two seasons (what does UTEP offer that we don't...besides a border crossing)
4. Rice made a bowl game last year (enough said)
5. TCU was 1-10 in 97 and have now won at least 10 five times since 2000

You can come up with a lot of arguments for his statements, but the plain and simple fact is that we are not getting it done. Lots of other posts talk about PB and its time to go, which I agree with. But Copeland really screwed us up and his coach isnt helping...

ORSINI, please help us!

Well...SMU is finally getting publicity in the DMN! :) And the sharks are circling.

Nurse Sharks?

Are we so low that we don't even rate real Monsters?

We've read this column before about the differences between us and them.

We all know is. And hopefully with what I consider our first legit AD since the death penalty, we'll see what he has.

I think our talent is there. I think our coaches are not.

But someone needs to ask Jacque if the TCU fans would like to have our offensive players or theirs? Defense, no question them.

The great Forrest Gregg doesn't think much of you, either.

These two statements make me ask again: where did you go to school, TCU?

The second makes no sense at all, and as for the first: Gregg's name, loyalty, love of SMU and respect within football and college athletic circles were vital in getting the football program re-started. He is — and belongs — on the very short list of the most important and significant people in the history of SMU athletics.

Forrest Gregg let a lot of people down by accepting a completely unrealistic Model for this university to compete under. He was completely wrong as an AD. Never spoke publicly about the real problems the athletic department faced. Loyal to what? Ken Pye? Certainly not to building a strong Football team. Where is his contribution to the direction to university has been on in the last 20 years of losing. Is this what he hoped for. If not why hasn't he publically commented about the reasons the Model he followed without debate has been so unsuccessful.

since when did this JJT guy get so interested in bennett and smu? wierd. the thing about the article that i took exception with him saying is that when we beat UNT by two touchdowns he basically painted as a loss for us and a win for them. Now we give TCU everything they want and he credits them for doing what they needed to do to win. even the bennett haters must see the duplicity in that.

JJT started coming around when he became a columnist (what, about a year ago?) instead of a Cowboys beat writer.

Forrest Gregg was a great player and a nice man who is really loyal to SMU. He was not a good AD and was over his head and not the right hire at all. His hiring was another overreaction to all of our other overreactions to the shame of the DP - which by the way is officially a really long time ago and should never be brought up again.

And that's what I meant from my waste of time. Glad he was here, but he was not a good choice because he didn't have the vision to take us out of the DP hangover.

JJT wrote:

"Make enough excuses or talk enough about why you can't or don't win, and that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. That's the mind-set Steve Orsini, SMU's athletic director, knows he must change before SMU has any real success on the football field.

Don't misunderstand. Bennett is one of the most positive people you'll ever find, but the Mustangs simply haven't won enough under his watch for whatever reason to convince the players that if they do everything he tells them to do, SMU will win.

Patterson doesn't have that problem.

He can point to the four conference titles he's won at TCU. He can show his players leftover paraphernalia from the bowl-game goodie bags that provide tangible evidence that he knows how to win.

Maybe, one day, SMU's coach will be able to do that. "

After the NTSU game, I think, PB said that he was having problems communicating with the players. The players, according to PB, could not understand the coaching staff's expectations and directions. Any correlation? Is there any reason for the players to listen to PB and staff? What does PB have to point to, to motivate the players to listen to him? A nationally ranked defense at K-State? Most of our guys weren't even around then. I'm curious why the players should, and do, believe in him.
