Another example how this staff doesn't understand personnel

Postby George S. Patton » Mon Sep 24, 2007 8:12 am

This Bennett quote from the DMN regarding the 4th and 1 at the end of the first half.

SMU (1-3) got stuffed on fourth-and-1 from TCU's 24 near the end of the first half. RB James Mapps got the carry instead of more powerful back DeMyron Martin, who was stopped for no gain the play before. SMU worked in the off-season on converting short-yardage situations after struggling with them in 2006. "If I had the call back, probably, yes, DeMyron should have had that," coach Phil Bennett said. "But DeMyron had been dinged up the play before. At halftime, we didn't know if he would come back."

We seem to be hearing this a lot from this staff on the day after. Game management skills seriously lacking.

I read that quote in the paper this morning and it did not make sense to me. If DeMyron was banged up on the previous play, why was he the lead blocker on the 4th down play?

You are not allowed to criticize the coach using lines and arguments from my criticism bag from LAST summer

And since he did come back into the game in third quarter, do we have any comment as to why he DID NOT have one carry in that quarter? I just cannot understand why things like this go on with this program.

I guess they are trying to find more inventive ways to get themselves fired since they may not want to be here anymore. It was suggested by someone else that he is tired of coaching here.

And BTW, if that's true, then that's a gutless attitude.

I don't get the ongoing campaign to get Bennett fired. Let's let this season play out and the appropriate course of action will be obvious to the guy making the decision. I didn't like the outcome of course but I was encouraged by what happened on Saturday. The defense played their best game of the year it need hardly be said. Goes right with the theme that a few suggested during the week leading up to the game that the D will only continue to improve. There is no argument that they didn't. What more could you have wanted from them?

The offense's inability to punch it in against the Frogs is worrysome but we were playing a pretty damn good group in TCU's defense. My biggest concern there is with Burley. He was owned by Ortiz and his backup.

Let's see how the team responds against UTEP to open conference play.
