Emotional Wreck or Train Wreck?

Postby MrMustang1965 » Wed Sep 26, 2007 4:08 am

from Kate the Great's dispatch on Wednesday, 9/26

SMU athletic director Steve Orsini voiced his support for the Mustangs and Bennett following the TCU loss. But Bennett said he took the defeat hard.

"I was an emotional wreck Saturday night," he said. "I was crushed. I really thought going into that game we'd win that game."

He also said that he hadn't coached a game in which one team had dominated do thoroughly (statistically, at least) and lost. He's right. He should be emotional after a game like that. He knows the vultures are circling, and the Ponies played hard and played their best game of the year, and in a lot of ways, they won that game. I would have been heartbroken if I was the coach, too. I'm a loyal fan, and it was a long, miserable drive home from that dump of a stadium in a dump of a town. I can only imagine how he felt.

Break through Saturday, start 1-0 in CUSA!

Those are the famous words that are said during the season that translate into "A new coach will be here after the season." Whenever an AD or owner (in pro programs) expresses confidence for the coach, that means he has no confidence.[/quote]

Goal doesn't change. 8-0 in conference, Bennett, Burns, and Gush be darned. Tall to impossible order, but get a little D like last week, a couple of breaks like SMU didn't get last week, and another TD and field goal per game. Aim for 8-0 and hit 6-2 (still tall order, but a little more down to earth), and we are probably bowl-bound, if not conference contenders.

Orsini's looking at the end; that's his job. Since he has his eye on that ball, I'm not taking my eye off of the wins ball until it is mathematically impossible to salvage the season.

Bennett said on TV last night that he believed the Ponies had a good shot at winning the conference. Pipe Dream, we shall see. It is going to be a hard road. It all starts (or ends) Saturday.

Hey Grim,

Your agreement is the kiss of death?

Then don't say anything. Get Billy & Mandy to do it.

How long would he keep his job if he came out and said, "I don't think we will win another game"?

I would rather him keep fighting and not have him and the team just give up. We may very well get a new coach, but I really don't want to endure a 1-11 season to get one.

I like PB as a person as much as anyone. But remember HE came out before the season and said that if the team doesn't improve from last year and isn't in a bowl, then the coaching staff doesn't deserve to be here. He was praised by some for being so frank in his assessment.

Not really. He stays. I actually think 6-6 with this record is another step of improvement. Tougher schedule this year in several respects.
