"He'll get another NFL job. I don't see him going the college route"
I dunno, I see him taking the "Pete Carroll" route, but again SMU isn't exactly USC. ![]() C-ya @ Milos!
How much income would he LOSE by taking the SMU job? To get a name coach like a Mariucci, SMU would have to spend at least $1 Mil. per year if not $1.5 Mil. per year. I don't see that happening. I hope that Orsini can prove me wrong on that.
re: How much income would he LOSE by taking the SMU job?
Well isn't the guy basically an unemployed coach? Sure he makes some change as an analyst and giving speeches but coaching may be in his blood. I would think in his case, the longer he stays out of the game, the less attractive he becomes. Plus he probably is already fairly wealthy. He might enjoy coaching and money may not be his prime concern. Of course if he came to SMU and turned us around how much would that be worth when the elite programs would start to show interest? C-ya @ Milos!
And if he comes to SMU and the administration keeps him from becoming successful, how much does his value drop?
Just send 'da money.

So are you saying it will be almost impossible for Orsini to get a upper level coach because they all think their value may drop? C-ya @ Milos!
2 time head coach in the NFL. Got fired from both places. Not everyone gets the trifecta chance like Norv Truner.
yeah and i am not 100% sure we would even want this guy?
i mean he seems like a top tier coach but why is he a top tier coach? didn't he just have like 1-2 good seasons in college as a head coach? then the Niners hired him wasn't his best year with the Niners all really Seifert's team? kind of like Switzer was with the Cowboys? the Niners fired him i think ND contacted him, but he chose to stay in Detroit and now Detroit has fired him why is this guy so respected? like I said I am not pro/con just throwing his name out C-ya @ Milos!
Ask Matt Doherty if his value has dropped. He has overhauled the basketball program, and if he wins a lot of games here, he'll have some big state school back the Brinks truck up to his front door. He might or might not accept it, but if a coach could do in football what Doherty is doing in basketball (and that's before Doherty has even seen the fruits of his recruiting labor), his value would skyrocket, not fall.
First, I love coach D and think he is doing wonders. I hope and hope he is successful on the hilltop, but we will not know for a couple more years. So don't use coach D as an example yet. Second, all it takes to turn a BB program is a couple of good players. To turn a FB program takes 30 good players. Much more difficult job. So a BB coach could be successful at a school while the FB coach can't. Just send 'da money.
Bill Walch went back to Stanford, John Robinson went back to USC, Dennis Erickson now at AZ ST. SMU is going to have to pay the $. NO choice. I think they will, it's an investment. If SMU wants to get back to the 82 level it will take a large investment. Then the $ starts rolling in with TV, Full stadiums etc.
Too close to TJ ![]() GO MUSTANGS!
FIGHT ON!
If Matt lives what he is preaching, SMU can be a destination for BB and, perhaps, FB. Having turn a SMU program into a National Player, he would have tenure for life in Dallas, ala Dean Smith, his idol. I am always amazed when coaches read their own clippings and campaign for a bigger job, e.g. Barnett (Northwestern to Colorado), Coach Fran (NM/TCU to Alabama/A$M), etc. and live to regret it. If his family loves Dallas and Dallas loves him, why subject yourself to higher expectations with no assurance of sustainable success. Ego is the only reason. Remember when coaches were teachers? Here here. Your comments are spot on, IMHO. But Doherty has been at a larger program and found out the pitfalls the hard way. He knows it can be done in a place like SMU, and the Lord willing and the creeks don't rise, he will construct a highly respectable, competitive program that will show promise consistently. He will be paid well, and he will be able to enjoy a Park Cities life at a reasonable level of personal risk and frustration. Finding a pool of coaches who meet the following parameters is a harder road to hoe: 1) The most important...CAN WIN 2) 2nd most important...WON'T TRADE UP BECAUSE HE CAN WIN. 3) Is happy with the Park Cities Light lifestyle 4) Likes decent money but not Park Cities money 5) Good recruiter (that's for you, Stallion) 6) Good motivator 7) Good game day decision-maker...cool head, in control ![]() "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." Why in the name of Dave Smith do we continue to throw around coaches who will NEVER darken the doorway of this "coaching graveyard"?? We will end up hiring, if it comes to that, some young up and coming stud...not freakin' Vince Lombardi or Steve M., Terry B., Lou Holtz, Darrell Royal, etc., etc....long live Rusty Russell.
