from Kate H. of the DMN:
UNIVERSITY PARK – Coach Phil Bennett's steadfast claim that SMU can compete for the Conference USA title may sound farfetched after the Mustangs' sketchy 1-3 start. SMU opens C-USA play Saturday against UT-El Paso.
"We're very capable of competing and winning this conference, without question," Bennett said this week. "I totally believe that."
Athletic director Steve Orsini has said he's not giving up on the program, the players or the coach – Bennett is 18-44 in five-plus seasons – with conference play still ahead.
Do they have denial issues? Or is turning this thing around still doable?
"It's like being in the game," sophomore defensive back Bryan McCann said. "If we give up a bad play, we've got to turn around and say we still have a job to do. We did go 1-3 in nonconference. ... It's on our minds, but we know we just have to move forward."
