Terry Bowden is readyModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower
A BCS program may very well get Bowden but we do have a chance potentially for a variety of reasons. 1. If Bennett gets canned before the end of the season, which I think is rather likely, we will have an opening and can offer him a job before most BCS programs will. This is a guy who hasn't coached in a decade. If we make a solid offer in season, he may decide to take it rather than hold out for the uncertainty of greener pastures after the season. 2. Bowden's last job was a big time program in Auburn. I don't know Bowden or his thoughts, but his experience there did end sourly. Maybe he is not all that eager to jump back into a BCS program where the pressure, politics, and expectations are ramped up and things are so much more than just about football. Not saying Bowden would be likely, but then again I never would have expected Doherty to be a "likely" hire and here he is.
might as well ask him and let him say no. I agree it is doubtful he'll say yes, but if we don't ask him at all that's silly.
Is Bowden the Doherty-esque candidate for a fb coach SMU needs to be looking for?
Seems like it would be a very Orsini move to make
Tommy Bowden paylayed the Tulane job into a pretty good job at Clemson. If SMUever hires someone who can turn this thing around, they won't be here long.
The real question is whether the adminstration and faculty influence Turner enough that he won't hire a coach for 1.2 -1.4 million which is what it is going to take.
BTW, word has it that the money is there, it's up to Turner to say go for it. If he says yes, then Bowden is the guy or it will be Johnson at Navy.
please god, lets not run the wishbone for the next 7 years.
I'm sure we will offer bowden when the time comes, and he might think about it, but it aint gonna happen. Once he talks to his dad and a few people, he will not be coming to smu. He may be tempted and like the idea, but talk about risk. if he ever failed and got fired from here, yahoo won't even want him to write columns about womens rowing.
i don't really see the problem with that, frankly.
Johnson was June Jones' OC at Hawaii. It's not like he doesn't know anything about the passing game. Moving to SMU from Navy is at best a lateral move for Johnson. It could be a step down... SMU would definitely have to "Pony Up" in the funds department to get him.
You mean Johnson knows the wide open passing game and the wishbone and adjusts his offense to the personnel that is available to him? I have never heard of such a thing. I thought you just keep running whatever offense you know whether it works or not.
Class of '91
Terry Bowden hired on the Hilltop would raise some eyebrows for sure. People might actually think SMU is serious again. Being out of football for a while, could be a plus for SMU. Terry might think he needs to sharpen his skills a bit, get SMU rockin', then a bigtime job would be the next step.
Yes, exactly. It's a pretty novel idea. Don't you think?
