Check out this pretty comprehensive look at what Steve Orsini might have in mind, plus a history of coaching hires since 1988.

of the Coaches on that list I'd rank them

1. Glen Mason
2. Terry Bowden
3. Bo Pellini
4. Rick Neuheisal-(with reservations)
5. Applewhite
6. Brent Venables

I think that is a very good list. I would also add Mike Shula as a possible candidate. And if we waited until after the season, I would think you would kick Fran's name around a bit, although I know even mentioning that makes some's blood boil.

One other thing. Of that list I think Applewhite would be the least likely to accept the position. He turned down Rice last year. Does he see SMU as such a step up that he would accept the SMU job a year later when he could have already been the HC at Rice?

O'Brian turned him down. So did the Pitt Coach who now is at Stanford.

The most impressive list is the one of people who, upon further review, decided at some point they didn't want the SMU job:

John Mackovic
Skip Holtz
Mike Gottfried
Norm Chow
Bill McCartney.

Second most impressive is the people who interviewed and didn't withdraw from consideration, including:

the aforementioned O'Brien
Ray Perkins
Ray Sherman
Walt Harris
Chuck Long
Charlie Waters (that's for you Stallion)

There's nobody listed there who hasn't been mentioned by the PonyFans on this board, except for the likes of Marty Schottenheimer and Jason Garrett. Whoever coaches SMU next probably is not on that list.

Stanford fired Walt Harris...Is the SMU gig viewed as a "coach killer job"?
Of course it is! Why am I asking this silly question?

How about Tom Landry?
He's just as likely a candidate.

I'm not saying Garrett wouldn't be great, and I'm not suggesting SMU should aim low. But are you watching the Cowboys? The Jason Garrett lickfest is just beginning. By the end of the year, he'll be the next hot NFL coaching candidate.

EDIT: Aikman just said he thinks Garrett will be a head coach in the NFL next year.
