While you're at it, pay some top-flight assistant coaches. When Nebraska was a top-5 team every year, the Nebraska state government kept authorizing raises for Tom Osborne. But he had a bunch of money in the bank, and since he walked (and still walks) on water up there, he couldn't pay for a meal anyway. So he divided up his bonuses among his assistants, which is why he got good assistants and kept them for many years. To get a good coaching staff, you have to make the jobs financially appealing to top candidates.
We need to make sure we get someone that other people WANT to learn from and work for. I am sure we missed the boat on Applewhite because he has arguably the best coordinator job in the country, learning from Saban. I doubt he will leave after just one year.
Applewhite would never come here if offered. All he has to do is bide his time at Alabama, and he'll land a BCS job eventually. Why move prematurely to a coaching graveyard (sorry, but that's everybody's perception) while he's still in his twenties and his star is rising? At first, I thought the suggestion of Bowden was a pipe dream, but now, I'm beginning to think this could be a possibility. Retread, out of coaching for a while, won't get an immediate look from a top BCS school, big name, former coach of the year, still has some credibility with this generation of recruits....who knows, why not? Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!
NEUHEISEL Sir, shooting-star, sir.

whomever it is, enlisting the services of the best recruiter currently on the Hilltop couldn't hurt. A conversation like "Good morning, my I speak with Terry, please. Hi Terry, this is Matt. Doherty. Not unlike yourself, I was once an AP coach of the year at a big time program. Also not unlike yourself, that honeymoon didn't last long. At any rate, I'd like to discuss something more positive with you. Got a minute?"
