Stallion wrote:Prove you wrong. About what? That you must be one of the most naive people in the world to fall for Phil Bennett's SMU Camp [deleted]? Well Phil Bennett has about 8 games to make the "magic" work before he gets his [deleted] run out of here and that type of thinking is exposed as total crap. You think I haven't had discussions like this in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. Every year there are people on this board telling me that Rivals doesn't know what its talking about and SMU's team will be real swell led by super star sleeper recruits like Cole Beasley and Braden Smith who Head Coach X found in South Dakota. Teams that have winning programs 90% of the time have better quality football players who were more highly recruited than those on the other team. If either Phil or you actually think that only 9 players in the Texas Top 150 can help his football team then I'm wasting my time even discussing this with you.
You can behave so obtusely. I DIDN'T DISAGREE WITH YOU.
Geez. I KNOW THAT IT DOESN'T WORK. And I know that he has 8 games to keep his job (STILL DOESN'T VALIDATE HIS METHODS, THOUGH).
I am saying that he is deliberate about his recruiting strategy; I never said I thought it would work. I don't know if it is hubris, laziness, or just an attempt at rifling vs. shotgunning. To not offer higher kids is just plain stupid, but if he is really anal about evals, and they are not at the camp, he either needs to have a staff member become a quant or he gets somebody to surf the recruiting sites. Both require some originality, coin to pay them, and a whole lot of time that, given his consistent behavior, suggests he thinks is a waste of time. And again, so you can hear me say it yet again, you are correct; he stands a high likelihood of being proved gravely wrong. Happy?
The only thing I can say in his favor about his method over recruiting sites is that IMHO he wouldn't get any more traction from sites approach vis-a-vis actually having recruits sign. But on the other hand, if he isn't even giving himself more "at-bats", he will never hit the ball.
You were saying that Braden Smith probably wasn't in his first 10 choices.... On the contrary, I think he was in his top 10...AND I think Bennett did indeed give up on the higher ones IN HIS LIST (or they gave up on him). I didn't say it was right/good whatever...I said that is what is happening. He evals the talent from his camps. If they aren't there, he might not completely write them off, but he isn't focusing on them (I am thinking of Justin Smart...I do not recall him going to Bennett's camp...he found him through a series of telephone calls to Jerry, I think, but Smart wasn't really on the recruiting sites radar either). And that sucks, because if he is leaving money on the table, so to speak, then it looks a lot more like laziness and less like a strategy.
And for the record, THAT'S BAD (i.e. I AGREE WITH YOU THAT'S BAD). Clear now?

Maybe I'll misspell a lot of words and butcher the rules of grammar until people think I'm so emotionally involved in an opinion that it can't possibly be wrong.
I know I am going over the top on a really trivial point, but Stallion is obtuse to a fault. Not only does he want to win the verdict, but he insists that it be done so using the points he feels are important, the voice he uses to discuss them, and the syntax in their written and spoken composition. THAT is frustrating to me. Can't agree with him because he not only thought of it first, he's the ONLY one who thought of it.
God love him, he is classic PVA...proof by vigorous assertion. Needs a nap, though...real, real badly.

I dont know if this thread is still about Sam but the truth is he was really interested but whoever was recruiting him did not really follow through. Probably because we clearly have some big issues with our football program. He is a great player and really smart but we just dont know what we are doing. It was a mistake not to get him.[/i]

PB only wants to recruit from his camp roster. Not confidant enough to go after higher profile names. Uses excuse...'well we've seen the kids in person and know what they can do' + 'better evaluator of talent than M. Brown, U. Meyer, B. Stoops, etc. He was given a list of kids with back door, etc. links/ties to SMU or personnel that would have allowed for a shot, when one would have assumed we had none. Chose not to follow thru even after encouragement from his recruiting coordinator & others.
Also, if current recruiting hasn't shut down yet, it will in 2 weeks on Sunday after Southern Miss weekend. Why would this year be different than last?

His BROTHER (i.e. recruiting coordinator) encouraged him, and PB [deleted] off? Does the guy WANT to be sent packing? Geez.
