Yeah, it's already been mentioned on another thread but many students were sitting with their parents on the home sideline. Some of our grads like Darrin Johnson, Duke Hasson and Justin Rogers were hanging around on the home sideline stands or on the sideline itself too...Dustin Morton even showed up for practice recently...we aren't that pathetic yet, some people still believe in us :)

An OL who never got to see much PT but was one of the nicest, humblest OL SMU had ever seen.

According to his Wiki, he had sex with some of the strippers afterwards (SUPPOSEDLY). I suppose it's prostitution if he paid them at some point.

The only group of students that seem to care is the band...and some have even made fun of them.

Are you really surprised by the lack of turnout among members of the Greek community?

For members of the Greek system, at least at SMU, their organizations events come before any university wide athletic or non-athletic event. If the team was winning I'm sure they'd jump on the bandwangon. But still...

Seriously, when I was watching the Tech game with one of my fellow SMU alums we noticed after a commerical break ESPN's cameras picked up shots of Fijis or Phi-Delts holding up their frat flags. We just thought it was lame that those guys weren't holding up SMU flags instead.

And then we just said only at SMU....

This post is cracking me up. One side complaining about fair-weather student fans, the fair-weather student fans complaining about why they should waste their Saturdays watching a crappy team. The fact is, since the stadium has opened, with the exception of that first Kansas game (being there, it's hard to believe that atmosphere actually happened, but what a day it was) the team has obviously been horrible, and the student section starts small and ends smaller. Will consistent winning bring more students, yea, but don't get all bent out of shape b/c they aren't showing up this season, they don't show up any season.

Not to stereotype, but the "I'd rather be out drinking/partying" extends well beyond the Greek community. In my experience, it unfortunately extended into the teams in many occasions. Not necessarily the first stringers, but a lot of team players...
When we went to the Reno BBall Tourney back in 2005, definitely saw some player drinking it up hardcore the night before the game.
This mentality consumes the majority of the student population, gives everyone a "who cares" mentality about a lot of things, and really keeps SMU from being a top tier school in a lot of respects.

That's strange that you witnessed that because the travel squad/the guys who will or have a decent shot at getting PT during a game are required to stay at a hotel the night before a game to avoid those sorts of things from occuring.

Yeah - SMU Athletics has control over our athletes...no. Have you never seen football players throwing bricks in bar fights? Its quite amusing

At least, the person(s) we all witnessed had zero chance of seeing any play time, but I think it does set a bad precedent.

SMU gets a certain demographic of students, and that demographic is not the hardcore football fan demographic. A winning program will bring out a lot of people from Dallas but I doubt we'll ever have a huge student section as long as the price tag for 4 years is $100k+.

Here is what upsets me about this thread. I am an alum who attends football games regularly. I know that alum attendance is poor. I know that student attendance is poor. In general, we are a pretty awful draw at the gate. Why sit here and be holier than though criticizing a student body for only 600 students of a potential 6,000 coming to the game when I am pretty sure that the percentage of SMU alums in Dallas attending games is just as low???

My first year at SMU was in 2001. Ever since I have been an SMU fan (starting in highschool) we have been one of the VERY WORST FOOTBALL TEAMS IN THE NATION. People within a couple years of me that attend games are rather rare. Reason being, SMU has always sucked as long as we have been fans. I would venture a guess that in my 9ish years of being an SMU football fan we have won on average 3-4 games per season (playing the crappiest competition possible). Students now have never seen any success on the field. They have seen nothing but failure. Do you expect good crowds from students to see Bennett's next impressive 3 win campaign? F___ no!
